Why Are Romeo And Juliet Not Be Taught

Romeo and Juliet “Romeo, Romeo, Romeo! Here’s drink. I drink to thee”(Act 4 Scene 3) This quote is talking about Juliet drinking poison. Romeo and Juliet should not be taught in the ninth grade curriculum. It teaches students to keep secrets, marry at a young age, and suicide. I believe that my generation lacks the ability to fight for what they really want. There is fear of being judge by family and the outside world. Although the book teaches love, I still choose to believe that the book should not be taught in ninth grade curriculum. The first reason why the book should not be taught is because it teaches readers to keep secrets. For example in Act 3 Scene 5 Juliet is weeping in front of her mom. She makes her mom believe that she is crying over Tybalt’s death but she is really …show more content…
In my honest opinion this is a very sensitive and important subject. In the 21st century this is a big topic. Females that are ten to twelve are said to most thought of suicide. A way that some choose to kill themselves is poison (Overdose on medication). In Act 3 Scene 1 Romeo kills Tybalt and is then banished. Juliet finds out of this and seeks to fake her death to be with Romeo. While this is happening Juliet’s father is planning her marriage with Paris and moves it up a day. Due to her situation Juliet takes a potion that Friar gave her. The news of the fake potion was unable to get to Romeo in time because of this Romeo was heartbroken and killed himself. When Juliet awoke she saw Romeo dead by her coffin and killed herself because she saw no life without him.
In conclusion, the book Romeo and Juliet should not be taught in the ninth grade curriculum. It teaches students to keep secrets, marry at a young age, and suicide. Since majority of ninth graders are ages from fourteen to fifteen and that is the age where suicide is most common it would not be a good idea to tell them it is good to kill themselves over

As the revered English young-adult novelist Aidan Chambers, known for such novels as Postcards from No Man’s Land and Dance on My Grave once said, “When you are in your teenage years you are consciously experiencing everything for the first time, so adolescent stories are all beginnings” (BrainyQuote). He was also known for his remarkably accurate depictions of adolescence in his novels for many around the globe, and for funding a writing “laboratory” for up-and-coming adolescent writers. And just as those stories are told, there needs to be the characters to tell them and give them justice. Romeo’s character is one who applies to that adolescent stereotype by being ignorant, just as Juliet is naïve, again fitting into a stereotypical adolescent…

When Romeo learns of Juliet’s apparent death, he immediately knew what he was going to do. “Experts say that even at ages 16 and 17, when compared to adults, juveniles on average are more likely to overlook alternative courses of action”(Teens Brains Hold key to their Impulsiveness). Romeo didn’t even think of any other alternative to killing himself and didn’t consider any of the consequences or the amount of pain it would cause both his family and Juliet’s. All he was thinking about was that he wanted to be with Juliet and that suicide was the only way to get that…

Oregon City High School should give the students’ an option whether or not to read the well known ‘Romeo and Juliet’ by William Shakespeare. Students have their own opinions and should be allowed to vote if they want to read the book. I can see why teachers want to read the book because it is a piece of history and the story plot is very dramatic, this is proven by 450 years of teaching this tragic story. On the other hand, I see the students point of view. This story was very hard to follow without some guidance and the reading level was very advanced.…

In this essay i will be talking about how the story Romeo and Juliet should be taught in freshmen. I will be giving out evidence to show why this is a good idea of teaching in 9th grade, especially because most teens can relate to this movie and most teens start to have boyfriends and girlfriends in high school. Just like Romeo and Juliet their only teens, and their already planning on getting married and this showed how it affected their lives, this is a good example on what teenagers should not do. This movie helps teenagers not to rush things and get to know each other better before going on to the next step. First of all in scene five act one it states “ Romeo sees Juliet and forgets Rosaline entirely; Juliet meets Romeo and falls just…

To begin, some people may think that the play, Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, should not be taught in school, while others think it should. Although the idea of reading Romeo and Juliet in English class may make students groan and imagine the worst, there are many benefits as to why reading such a difficult and popular type of literature exist. In my opinion, I think Romeo and Juliet should be included in a school’s curriculum because of how helpful it could be to those students. There are many benefits, including that students will have a better understanding of how to step out of their comfort zone and will allow students to understand more complex pieces of literature in life. Also, students will learn new vocabulary and learn about the 15th century society and customs.…
