In 1973, the supreme court case of Roe v. Wade, “legalized abortion nationally on the basis that Americans have an inherent right to privacy that includes the right of a woman to decide whether to have children and to make that decision with her doctor without state interference (“Roe v. Wade: Q & A”).” Prior to this ruling, abortion was illegal in all states except Hawaii, Alaska, and New York. Around this time other cases were being held, including the case Doe v. Bolton which targeted a less strict law in Georgia but it still came with the same result (Masci). Ever since these decisions over 55 million unborn babies have been aborted (National Right to Life). The number one reason that abortion should be illegal is that it is murder. The reason that abortion is so highly debated is that many people do not believe a fetus is a person, therefore it is not murder. However, the Unborn Victims of Violence Act protects unborn babies in cases of homicide by considering it a double homicide if the mother and child are killed ("18 U.S. Code § 1841 - Protection of Unborn Children."). This act being ratified refutes the ruling of Roe v. Wade, thus making it illegal to perform an abortion. Another reason that a fetus is a child is that a zygote is the beginning of new human life. This new zygote is a fertilized egg and “This new single-cell human being immediately produces specifically human proteins and enzymes , and genetically directs his/her own growth and development. Finally, this new human being the single-cell human zygote is biologically an individual, a living organism an individual member of the human species (Irving).” This murder can put a major weight on the mother and cause many psychological problems. The stress and guilt that a woman may feel after an abortion can take a major toll, things such as depression, drug abuse, and suicide are more common among women who have had an abortion. …show more content…
Women who have had an abortion are 37% more likely to develop depression (Jaslow). This is a gateway to many other psychological problems that may cause problems for the woman later in her life. Women also had a much higher chance of abusing drugs after an abortion. They were 110% more likely to abuse alcohol and 220% more likely to use marijuana. This is dangerous not only for the woman, but for any future children she might decide to have. After having an abortion, women are 155% more likely to commit suicide. This is the ultimate price to pay for performing an abortion, thus another reason why it should be illegal. Not only does an abortion affect a woman mentally, it affects her physically as well. An abortion can give a woman a “2.3 times higher risk of having cervical cancer, compared to women with no history of an abortion (“After Abortion”). Millions of loving families are willing and able to adopt a baby, however most are unable to adopt because there is simply just not enough children. Last year, over two million couples wanted to adopt a baby, …show more content…
This is true, however that unborn baby that is being killed has no say in the matter. It did nothing wrong except it is still being given the ultimate punishment. No matter the inconvenience every child deserves a chance at life. Another argument that is presented relates to the fundamental question of this debate: Is a fetus a human? Those who are pro-abortion believe that a fetus is just a mass of cells at the beginning of its growth cycle. However, that “mass of cells” already has a beating heart 21 days after conception. Just 21 days and the baby already has the beginnings of a circulatory system and a beating heart, and an abortion will stop
