What Is to Be Done by Nikolay Chernyshevsky is a romantic novel that has a lot to do with women’s position in the 1800’s. The main character Vera helps the audience see the kind of different relationships women faced as they grew up during this time period. The author wants to show the different perspectives based on the types of relationships Vera had for example with her mother. Marya was a strong women showing tough love to her daughter Vera. Marya realized that the society they were living in did not allow people to move up in class unless they were wealthy.
