Whether it is for gaming, business, education, or just light browsing, we rely on the computer to aid us to execute these tasks. Since the rise of the computer, society has greatly advance in ways of improving efficiency, problem solving, medicine, and etc.. As the years go by, we increasingly depend on them in order to solve many of the world’s problems. Since the start of the sale of personal computers to the public in the 1970’s, modern society has greatly changed. The computer is a electronic device that manipulates data in the ways of being able to store, retrieve, and process it. Several of the first consumer based personal computers such as the Commodore, IBM 5100, Apple I, and Apple ll all perform the same basic functions. You can use it to type documents, send email, and browse the internet. You can use it to handle spreadsheets, accounting, database management, presentations, games, and much more. “The inherently protean nature of the personal computer-its ability to be easily configured, via software, to accomplish an almost infinite number of applications-combined with regular and impressive improvements in the underlying hardware makes the computerization of modern society seem, in retrospect, overdetermined, almost inevitable” (Ensmenger 25). People are able to connect with each other via internet when using the personal computer. Using the internet, individual people are able to join with others to form and reform groups based on new and/or suppressed common interests. The internet allows people to communicate with each other over vast distances and across all kinds of boundaries that formerly made communication difficult or even impossible. According to Why the internet will never die, Matisse Enzer stated that “it moves the world slightly closer to a perfectly knowledgeable market, a market in which everything is advertised and everything that is wanted for purchase is requested somewhere, and buyers and sellers can contact each other with no cost” (pars. 16). Whether it is for entertainment or business, the computer has brought us all closer together than ever before. Computers have enhanced our resourcefulness to gather information easily by being to connect us to beneficial resources and individuals we may not have access to in the first place. Information is delivered at a rapid rate than ever before, thanks to real-time reporting from news outlets and blogs. But as the “up-to-the-minute information has become more prolific in recent years as social media, sharing tools have allowed individuals to distribute news at a rapid pace” (Cusolito pars. 1). Our accessibility to the world has been made easier thanks to the personal computer. Personal computers can be found in almost every business sector since they are vital for tracking and storing data. They are also useful for improving internal communications and managing work flow (Cusolito pars. 2). With them, it “allows the transmission of electronic email, which can assist in managing day-to-day activities within a work group” (Cusolito pars. 2). Many companies develop management information systems which are composed of a centralized database to store information, specialized software to put together and report data, and extensive programming to keep work productivity high and smooth (Cusolito pars. 2). Without the personal computer, businesses will never reach their full potential. In this generation, personal computers are being utilized as an education tool to aid students in their studies. They generally provide an abundance of updated data and information from multiple sources than the traditional use of textbooks. They offer students a more flexible approach in …show more content…
9). They may have trouble dealing with intimacy and develop a false view of sexual encounters (Anjum pars. 9). Along with pornography, children are in danger of learning about various types of drugs and how they alter sensations or how crimes are committed (Anjum pars. 9). The younger generations are at a greater risk of participating in risky behavior than the previous generations due to the mass availability of the personal computer.
The personal computer greatly changed modern society in both positive and negative ways. It aids us of finding solutions to solve the world’s problems, but at the same time we often create new problems upon ourselves. It is a never ending cycle of solutions and problems, that is why the personal computer will always have a place in our daily lives for years on
