1. Accept and involve the public as a legitimate partner—Communities and the individuals within them have a right to participate in decisions that affect their lives and property. Involving the public helps to reduce their anxiety and ensures an informed public.
2. Listen to the audience—Take the time to determine what the public is concerned about, what they are thinking; taking into consideration their emotions and engendering trust.
3. Be honest, frank and open—If you are not perceived as trustworthy and credible, your message will be received with suspicion. Trust and credibility are a spokeperson’s most precious assets and once lost, are almost impossible to regain.
