What is missed is the long term effect it has on a person. Jeffrey J. Selingo, the author of College (Un)bound, states, “While we often express the value of a college degree in dollars and cents, what is often lost in such calculations are the added benefits of higher education, both to the individual and to society as a whole” (168). Along with these long term benefits, Professor Michael Mumper of Ohio University has compiled 25 years worth of studies and has established that college is an important step in people’s lives. He discovered that people are able to better themselves and figure out their place in this world (Selingo 168). A survey by Pew Research Center validates this statement when they concluded that a collegiate education “was very useful in helping them grow intellectually and mature as a person” (Selingo 168). This survey also concluded that having additional education after high school can give a person the opportunity to have a career that will make them feel that they are being more productive and fruitful. In addition to the mental and emotional growth, studies show there are health benefits as well. Selingo says, “By almost every measure, college graduates lead healthier and longer lives, have better working conditions, have healthier children who perform better in school, have more of an interest in art and reading, speak and write more clearly, have a greater acceptance of differences in people, and are more civically active” (168). In other words, a secondary education or higher peaks a person’s creative and interpersonal abilities that benefits themselves as an individual and the surrounding people in their
