THE ground shook beneath their feet as the enemy fired rounds of shells one right after the other. The aid station was less than two miles away from the front line, and to Vera and her nurses it was absolutely horrifying. In the months they had been on duty, this was the closest they ever came to the battlefield.
Tensions in the aid station were high. Too many men were being dropped off, and there weren't enough staff members to tend to them all. The cases were brutal, and fatal. Vera mentally prepared herself for any surgical requests that might have been thrown her way. She and the other nurses bustled to and fro throughout the aid station; making sure tools were sterile, and trying to keep dying men alive.

"I need morphine!" "He keeps bleeding out!" "He's too far gone, he's not going to make it!" "Nurse! Nurse get me some--" "Dammit!" Mixed in with those words were the never-ending cries and moans from the injured soldiers themselves. It all sent shivers down Vera's spine, but she kept her head on straight.
After stitching up the man, Vera applied a fresh bandage. She picked up the nearby tray of dirty tools and took it with her towards the other tent. A rush of medics stormed in, carrying an injured soldier on a stretcher. Vera saw his face.
The tray of bloody tools in her hands nearly crashed to the ground had she not been wary of it. Her breathing became shallow and the rush of blood echoed in her ears. "Bucky," she whispered, watching as he was placed on an empty operating table.
Vera found herself walking towards the scene. Captain Alan rushed to Bucky's side; he reached for a pair of scissors and began cutting away the soldier's shirt. "There's no exit wound! He's lost nearly a pint of blood on the way in!" A privacy curtain was pulled to the side, obscuring Vera's view of the man she had feelings
