In both poems, syntax such as the repetition of the title throughout the poem is used to emphasize certain phrases to set the poem’s tone. In Do Not Weep, Maiden, for War is Kind, the title is repeated in every other stanza, and the description of a man’s violent death is placed in between each repetition. However, instead of making a mockery of humanity’s love for war, it shows the guilt of an army nurse who can’t save all of her patients. Before each repetition of the title, Adams describes the horrifying last words of wounded soldiers.
