A few days after we arrived I had a complication, which caused me to be rushed to the emergency room. Upon arrival, my parents were confronted with another unforeseen challenge, which was that the doctors were unfamiliar with Bladder Exstrophy and had to contact my surgeon at Children’s Hospital. I recall hearing these stories and it made me realize just how uncommon Bladder Exstrophy and the field of Urology as a whole was. I generally had the conviction that Urology just concerned the bladder, however as I researched I understood that there was many more components. Urology is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urology covers many areas and is very complex. With my condition alone, my bladder, many things were affected. My skin, muscle, and pelvic bone at the lower part of the abdomen were not joined. For one tiny organ to affect so many different areas in the whole body was so amazing to me. For example, in males, urology covers their infertility and the causes. Testicular cancer can be one reason why a man can be infertile and primary doctors don’t always catch it; most males have to see a urologist to get the answer. Furthermore, when you think about testicular cancer, infertility (males), erectile dysfunction, and kidney stones your first thought as a patient or parent of a one is not that you need to see an urologist. This was the case with my parents, they did not understand why I had to travel all the way to San Francisco to see an urologist specialist after my initial surgery. They never had to face anything like Bladder Exstrophy, but was so grateful that there were doctors who specialized in
