I’ve always loved the sound of rain. Its soft patter against my window releases me from the stresses of college applications, if only for a moment. Then, as quickly as it came, the rain stops its descent upon my window and retreats; growing up in Central Florida, I have been well accustomed to erratic weather patterns such as the rain coming and going in a moment’s notice. Florida’s weather has taught me a valuable lesson over the years: life can be as unpredictable as the weather.

As each year in high school progressed, I found myself wanting to acquire more knowledge and learn about the world around me. To accomplish this, I signed up for college level classes. Although the rigor was challenging, I discovered the classes to be interesting as I learned to apply and synthesize what I was learning with my everyday surroundings. In AP Chemistry I was astounded to learn what my very existence was made of, and in AP Environmental Science I am learning of a love for the environment I never knew I had. Science classes as my school have made it possible for me to explore my interests in science and my environment.

I expanded this interest by volunteering at a hospital and attending various health academies. In the summer of junior year, I attended the Health Leaders Summer Academy held at UCF where I learned of the integral role science plays in our bodies, on earth, and in life beyond earth. The same summer I volunteered at Florida Hospital and I am currently volunteering at Orlando Regional Medical Center. While volunteering at Florida Hospital, I truly saw the unpredictability of life when I encountered a man having a heart attack on the stairwell. Like the weather, I never know what will happen from one moment to the next. Through volunteering, I have gained valuable insight into the medical field and I saw the difference one individual can make in their

Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

I participated in working the machine that screened for bone density and teaching those with negative screenings about the importance of osteoporosis. This opened my eyes to how many people in the public did not have daily access to healthcare, and how important these free screenings were for them. When the people who visited our booth smiled, held my hand, and thanked me after I…

Since my second semester at UT, I have devoted 15 hours a week to volunteering as a Young Life leader. Every week I help run a club meeting for dozens of high school kids, manage a planning meeting with my teammates, and lead a small group for sophomore girls. I spend hours at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School watching games and performances, and simply getting to know these young adults. Through investing this time to build relationships as a mentor and role model, I strove to show these girls that they are significant, noticed and valued. Volunteering as a Young Life leader has taught me invaluable lessons in building relationships, caring for others, and working with a team that will help me to be a more supportive and productive physician…

Growing up, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to doing something special in life. I was born in a village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. I recall, one day, accompanying my mother to a ladies house where there was a sick child. My mother was one of the women in the village who would take care of the sick; she learned everything she knew from my grandmother. When we got there, I saw my mother prepare some medicine and giving it to the ill child.…

Ever since I was a child I wanted to help people and didn’t realize how, until I stepped foot in my 7th grade science class. The day still replays in my mind like it was yesterday. I was walking into a new school, with new people, and I felt like the last leaf stuck on the tree, waiting to fall in place where I belonged, but oddly enough, this one basic anatomy and physiology class made me feel welcomed. What made me feel welcomed wasn’t really the teacher or the students in there, but the environment of that particular branch of science. What was so amazing about that side of science was there was always more to learn and more importantly you were learning about yourself.…

My Interest in the medical field all began when I was a young girl, growing up I always was fascinated by science and the human anatomy, and how each complex system made this one being. In school, I struggled with subjects such as reading and writing, but when it came to math and science it became a second language, figured it was mostly because of my curiosity and for passion learning, but what influenced me the most as a child was my mother. My mother is a Social Worker and she has to help and support people on daily bases and by watching her example giving to people out of the kindness of her heart back into the community, made me want to do the same and growing up in Christian home I was told that “God gives us gifts and talents so we can help and support his people,” and so I thought what better way to serve people then becoming a doctor; with these skills and…

I feel that I can make a difference in each patient’s life that I encounter, it might be as small as getting a wheelchair if they seem flaccid or weak, a blanket if they are cold, something to drink or just talking to a patient to get their mind off pre-surgery. I look forward to volunteering each week. The most rewarding day by far was being able to witness a nurse giving CPR to a child choking. She saved his life. I would want to someday be able to be able to save a life, not for the recognition but because I want to make a difference.…

Experiencing a course that is new is both intimidating and challenging at the same time. The realization of taking a harder class made me change my studying habits as well as doing independent learning to fully understand the concept of the materials that were given. Even though people say, ”You should get out of your comfort zone and do something different “ is something that I was afraid of since it was not something I used to; but I learned that every once in awhile people should take a risk and be open minded in everything they do. Taking my first AP class was something that changed my life for the better in realizing how different high school teaching is from college teaching. I was always fascinated in chemistry when I took the course during sophomore year; learning about how chemical react with one another creating something phenomenon and learning how a reaction takes place in a microscopic levelled me to take AP Chemistry.…
