The empathy unit has helped me look at the world differently in infinite ways. It has helped me detect what people might be thinking behind the words they say. Putting myself in other people’s shoes is a crucial part of empathy that some people don’t understand. The empathy unit has helped me think harder about the importance of doing that. Thinking about empathy has greatly impacted my opinion on life. Under the Surface made me question what people what is going on beneath people’s actions and words. At first I might have overlooked the fact that someone looks a bit sad or is acting pessimistic, but now I realize that there could be something going on. Everyone is going through something that is making their life a little bit harder. If we all try to improve one person’s life, or help them become happier each day, our world would be a much better place. …show more content…
She didn’t have many people who could feel empathy for her. They had no idea what it was like to be autistic. They didn’t understand how she thought. Her life was made so much harder as an effect of that. Dr. Carlock, her science teacher, was an important person to her. The reason being, he understood how her brain worked. He knew that she thought in pictures. For that reason, she felt strongly connected to him. Other teachers didn't even try to understand. They just thought she wasn't smart. Temple was able to accomplish amazing feats as a result of her mother teaching her important life skills. Manners, social skills, job skills, and life lessons was the information given to Temple that some autistic children don't catch on
