Tour Manager Case Study

A tour manager should have organization, interpersonal skills, listening skills, problem-solving skills, business skills, creativity, and knowledge of sound systems (Study.com, n.d.) All of these skills are important to have, but there are some that should be emphasized. Therefore, a tour manager must have excellent interpersonal skills. He/she must be able to communicate well to each client, worker, or potential contact. He/she must also be able to multi-task and be able to quickly solve problems. As a tour manager, he/she is always on the go and doing several things at once. It is important that he/she is able to focus on the important aspects and tasks at hand while getting them accomplished in a timely matter, which also has to do with time management. Also there are always going to be conflicts on a tour. A tour manager must be a good problem solver, level-headed and some of the time act a mediator when dealing with problems that occur.

One aspect Joey emphasized to gain experiences was through volunteering and interning. He started off by career shadowing a local promoter for a show that was coming to town. From gaining that contact, he was then able to volunteer with that promoter for the next two years, gaining training in promotional activities. After that he volunteered at a local venue space for a while where he learned all about booking a local show. So a piece advice from Joey is to never close off an opportunity even if it is unwanted. The only thing that really matters is that it is all about learning and experiencing that opportunity.
