Tina Degroot Short Story

“Tina Degroot, please come and retrieve your pill supply!” screeched an official over an intercom.
The girl who was just called looked about 21 years old and had a stern expression plastered onto her narrow face. She had long jet black hair that swished as she walked into one of the many rooms where the officials handed out the pill supply.
“Cora Strathmore, please come and retrieve your pill supply!” screamed another official over the same intercom. When Cora stepped through the entrance of the doorway she was blinded by many fluorescent lights and the room smelled as if had been doused in antiseptics. When her eyes adjusted and took in her surroundings she was surprised to see that it was only a small white room with a desk in the center and a security camera placed in the corner. At the metal desk sat a government official who had thick glasses perched on the bridge of his big nose. He was staring at two large stacks of paper, looking completely exhausted. Without glancing up from his work he said in a gruff monotone voice, “Please take a seat.” Cora took her seat in the chair that sat right in front of the desk. Her heart was pounding so hard that she thought he could of possibly heard it, and her mind raced with questions about what he was going to do to her. Instead of doing anything to her, he simply pressed a silver button that was placed on the wall. A few seconds later a big brown crate shot out of a hole that had just appeared in the side of the wall. He reached into the cubby and grabbed a fairly heavy crate. “Here take this, and you’re allowed to leave now,” grunted the official. Cora stood up and reached out across the metallic desk and took the crate from the man. “What’s inside?” “What do you think, it’s your pill supplies for the year.” “The Cure!” eagerly said Cora. “Of course it’s the Cure, now kid go home and enjoy your life,” he answered annoyed. ⚫⚫ Four Years Later ⚫⚫ Cora sat in front of the TV watching the nightly news while fiddling with her beloved necklace when her program was rudely interrupted by a breaking news story. “This just in, we have just recieved very important information about the Cure.

We have collected data from the headquarters of where the Cure was originated. Scientists have just discovered the body of Tina Degroot in her home. She was discovered when she hadn’t scanned her wrist after ingesting one of her doses. They have proven the cause of death was... It was caused by the Cur---,” the broadcaster abruptly stopped talking, he was staring at his paper in shock.
“Mom come in here!” yelled Cora worriedly. “What is it?” her mom replied while running into the living room. Before Cora could rewind the TV and explain to her mother what had just happened, the broadcaster continued his sentence in a shaky voice. “Sorry about that folks, they said the cause of death was a... was completely natural. No need to worry, enjoy the rest of your... n-night,” and with that the TV went black. “I knew that girl,” whispered Cora. “What!?” exclaimed her mother, “Did you just say you knew that girl?” “Well I... I didn’t really know her personally. I remember her... She was just the girl who was called before me at the ceremony four years ago. My very first ceremony,” Cora said in a shocked tone. Her mother was staring at the floor with an exasperated look smeared across her face. She was also fussing with her necklace. The same necklace that Cora had hanging around her neck. “It’s happening again...” mumbled her mom. “Wait, this has happened before mom?” asked Cora. “Yes, it was before you were born, when the Cure had just been developed. Everything was perfect, people loved taking the pills. It seemed like this idea was just to great,” she trailed off, but continued her story. “So after many weeks of people overdosing, citizens began to randomly die. That’s when I first started to become suspicious of the Cure
