The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, often called TJ for short, offers an extensive STEM-based curriculum with additional focuses in humanities and foreign languages. The heart of the school’s curriculum is biology, English and technology. The school boasts as many as 10 research labs that delve into everything from astrophysics to oceanography. Participation in AP classes is mandatory at TJ.

Because all students are mandated to attend all IB courses and exams, students can obtain up to a year of college credit before they attend. Students are selected through a lottery, meaning all potential applicants have an equal chance of attending the International Academy.
The curriculum focuses on eight main subjects: English, the arts, a second language, humanities, science, education, technology and mathematics. The school also offers Honors classes in almost every course it teaches as part of its Middle Years Program. Further still, the school mandates 150 hours of community service or co-curricular activities in order to graduate. Some of the co-curricular clubs available include chess, dance, film and robotics.

High Technology High School (Lincroft, NJ)
At the heart of High Technology High School’s curriculum is engineering. From civil engineering to digital electronics, this school’s mission is to educate the next generation of engineers, no matter what sort of engineering they wish to pursue. This is accomplished through a top-notch science, math and technology curriculum. The school also maintains a partnership with three local colleges so that their students may attend any of these three colleges right after they graduate.
In the 2003-2004 school year, HTHS won the Department of Education’s National Blue Ribbon Award, the highest honor any school can achieve. HTHS offers several student clubs to constantly challenge students, including the math league, robotics club, the Model United Nations, the school newspaper and the experimental research group.
5. Staten Island Technical High School (Staten Island, NY)
What makes the Staten Island Technical High School especially unique is that it proudly boasts a 100% graduation rate even though almost a third of its students are economically disadvantaged. Although the school’s Advanced Placement courses are optional, all of the school’s students take them and pass beautifully.
