This Is What Abortion Looks Like By Wendy Davis Summary

Improved Essays
Abortion is a very touchy subject to a lot of people. Sometimes you can't even say the word "abortion" without getting disgusted looks from the people around you or getting a lecture about why it's a good thing. Abortion is not a good thing. Why should an innocent life be taken without even having the ability to defend itself? Why should a living thing be told that it doesn't have feelings or that it doesn't matter? Why should a baby not have the chance to live simply because of the poor choices of its mother? Abortion is not a good thing and should not be tolerated. Taking the life of an innocent human being should never be accepted like it is.

In the article, “This Is What Abortion Looks Like,” the author's main point is how abortion is a topic that not many people talk about and think is bad but, Wendy Davis, a Texas senator talked about it in public. The author also discusses her own battles with an abortion that she had. She states that the morning sickness made it difficult to take care of her two toddlers. She uses a lot of other excuses to her decision such as she didn’t know who the father was, she was depressed and she was poor. She basically says she wasn't in the best place in life to have another child and she made a personal decision that would change her life forever. The author argues that abortion is not a topic that should be shamed and we as people should stop judging abortions as justified or unjustified. Personally, I agree with the author of the article on one thing; abortion should be talked about and more young women should be educated about it.

Many women don’t know how abortion affects their baby, they just look at it as a way to fix a mistake they may have made by becoming pregnant in the first place. I don’t believe that this is right at all. In 2012, unmarried women accounted for 85.3% of all abortions. (U.S. Abortion Statistics) To me that seems like just a lot of women who felt alone, and like they couldn’t take care of a baby on their own. If more women were educated about abortion and other option, such as adoption, hundreds of thousands of babies wouldn’t have lost their lives in 2012. Many people don’t know just how early the baby begins to form. Twenty eight days from conception a baby has eyes, ears, and even a tongue! That’s not even a month after conception! 89-92% of all abortions happen prior to the 13th week of gestation. 58% of places that preform abortions, won’t even do them until 8 weeks gestation. At just eight weeks, every organ is present, the baby’s heartbeat is steady, the stomach produces digestive juices, the liver makes blood cells, the kidneys begin to function and the taste buds are starting to form. (Baby Developmental Facts - Prolife Across America) Abortions may occur for many different reasons. About 3/4, of the women who had abortions, say that having a baby would interfere with work, school or other responsibilities; about 3/4 say they cannot afford to take care of a child; and 1/2 say they don’t want to be a single parent or are having problems with their husband or partner. (U.S. Abortion Statistics) I believe that most of these are just excuses. If you can’t

During her college years, Mathewes-Green was a pro-choice activist and viewed abortion as a right that all women should have, regardless of the consequences. She effectively uses personal anecdotes throughout her writing to inform the audience about the negative aspects of abortion. Mathewes-Green “was strongly in favor of legalizing abortion... we thought that few abortions would ever be done...we expected that abortion would be rare” (P 1,4,6). The reader can tell that she regrets thinking that few abortions would happen and Mathewes-Green realizes her mistake in thinking that would be true.…

When a woman becomes pregnant, she has given up on many things. Such as her education, or not being able to have job. The fact is that women will still get pregnant, and still have the choice to have an abortion. Women will still seek the help needed as to finding the right clinic to getting her abortion done. When a woman becomes cognizant of their pregnancy, there are two choices available to her; keeping the fetus or aborting the fetus. I think the latter option is absurd. Why hurt yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally to get rid of a life inside of you? It makes no sense. Also, have you seen an abortion performed?…

Why choose abortion? Abortion is seen as a necessity right because a women shouldn’t need a reason to not want to be pregnant. In the article “Abortion With Apology”, Katha Pollitt persuasively argues that it is simply the woman’s body and nothing should stand in the way of what she wants for herself. Pollitt asks, “What’s praiseworthy about bearing more children than you can--or want to--take care of?” (Abortion Without Apology).…

Judith Jarvis Thomson describes a fetus as being as much of a moral person as anyone, but he or she is not in fact entitled to using the mother’s precious resources. The idea of bodily autonomy is heavily stressed in her paper, “A Defense of Abortion”. Most of those who are against abortion tend to use the point that a fetus is a person as their major leg to stand on. Thomson argues that they fail to discuss what is impermissible about abortion. She provides strong reasoning for why abortion should be allowed and still makes the distinction that some cases should not permit it.…

I agree with Marquis when he states that abortion is only not seriously wrong in unusual circumstances such as rape or if the baby has little to no chance at survival. Abortion is an important topic in today’s society because in 2016 people from younger age groups are ending up pregnant with no chance of taking care of the baby, this results in child abuse and neglect. It is very easy for me to oppose abortion because I am not in this decision making process, the answer always boils down to the mother and her decision making choices. If abortion is the only chance at a mothers survival then it should be excepted. Rarely do you find a women who has been raped and impregnated that keeps the baby and is actually happy with the choice of keeping the child.…

If a woman is pregnant and decides she doesn 't want an abortion just because she doesn 't want a kid. Then I feel she should just give it up for adoption. Abortions should NOT be used to terminate ANY unwanted pregnancy. If a woman wants to abort a child, I feel she should have a good reason such as: not having the money to do so, under 18, mentally unwell, or the mother 's life is at stake. The consequences of my viewpoint may be teens having sex more often and just having abortions if they don 't want the…

So most of the abortions in the U.S are just because of unintended pregnancies. Women have to accept their consequences of the actions they took, and not kill a human being because they are not ready. Also raped women will just go through more and have more stress if they have an abortion. It will always be a part of them so there should be no excuse to get rid of a baby. “Abortion should not be permitted for rape because it is wrong for the child to be punished for the sin of the father” (Choice matters, 5).…

The Utilitarian and Deontological Discussion of Abortion Today, abortion has become a heavily debated topic whether socially or politically since the medical procedure was voted legal by the Supreme Court over 40 years ago. It is defined as the purposeful termination of a pregnancy before a normal childbirth (Abortion: Get Facts About the Procedure and Statistics). Whether you find yourself agreeing with it or not, many people have something to say. Abortion is very controversial because of the discussion whether or not a fetus is a person. Many wonder if there is a morally relevant point at some duration throughout the pregnancy or development of the fetus that could justify having an abortion or possibly not having an abortion.…

Not realizing that if abortions are outlawed then the rate of deaths would increase because women who desperately don’t want a child may try to self terminating or seek help from unqualified people. Since the US Department of Public Health evaluates family planning an governmental programs the abortion rate data is relied on, in public health terms (lee&Sprague,2). Instead of outlawing abortions, another way to prevent them is to make advances in education, technology, and contraceptives. The percent of abortions have decreased since it reached the peak in 1984 because people are giving more education, making more technology and contraceptives better and effective. (Rich & Wagner,…

Abortion can make someone’s life or break someone’s life. This is something that in my opinion is a very misinterpreted thing in such a way which is very wrong. I say this because people think that it’s the right thing to do if they know that they won’t be able to take care of the child. A lot of woman who experience unintended pregnancy undergo abortions also. Hospitals around America stopped providing the choice for a woman to have an abortion.…
