The theme of loss is seen here as the woman is seen to take time out of her day to sit with and comfort a dead animal. Therefore, a loss of dignity may be conveyed. The theme of love is conveyed towards the hare due to the lustuous sense created during the sensuous…

What type of essay is Behind the Formaldehyde Curtain? Behind the Formaldehyde Curtain is a descriptive essay. Descriptive essays revolve around an author describing something, whether that be an object place or in this case Jessica Mitford describing the routine of a funeral home concerning how they prepare and present a corpse. What method(s) of developing an argument or organizational pattern(s) has Mitford used in the essay?…
Throughout the narrative, she constructs her argument, including the emotional connection that the reader builds up that eventually terminates due to death. The piece starts off with an ordinary, “pleasant…
In the story Marigolds, by Eugenia Collier, the reader discovers the theme is to be innocent is to be a child and in order for one to mature, they must become compassionate. Out of the five clues to theme, the most relevant ones to this text are the conflict and solution, what the main character learns, and the stories symbolism. In the story Marigolds, there is an extremely important overarching theme that is still very relevant today. Conflict and solution are a huge clue as to what the theme of the story is. Lizabeth, the main character, doesn't know whether or not she should listen to the child or women in her and becomes confused in who she really is.…
The Shunammite Death is a horrible and sometimes an awful experience that is never an easy thing, especially for the loved ones affected by it, and in this story Luisa was directly affected by the dying lustful days or should I say years of her uncle’s life. Some people believe death should be a celebration and is in a sense of out with the old and in with the new but that is not what happened in this story. What seemed to be just the dying days of her uncle turned into just more than that since she was pressured into marrying him so she could inherit all of his belongings. The setting is a major influence since it is placed in the uncle’s house that has a weird feeling to it and not like summer. The themes through the story were death and lust since…
These quotes from the first paragraph of the story set the tone for the rest of the story, informing the reader that the rest of the story will not be a heartwarmer. The author continues on from this rough beginning, progressing the story a tough decision that the family makes. After the family deciding it was too much of a hassle to keep the protagonist around, “It was decided that [she] should die” (Atwood, 5).This gloomy statement continues to use somber tone that the author opened the story with, making the reader sympathize with the protagonist as she continues through her struggles. The story closes with on an interesting line from the protagonist; “Perhaps in Heaven I’ll look like an angel. Or perhaps the angels will look like me.…
I chose to read the book Funeral Festivals in America: Rituals for the Living by Jacqueline S. Thursby. This work explores numerous aspects of funerals and the customs that surround it. Although some of it was hard to follow and seemed a bit jumbled, I was able to get a sufficient amount of information from it that I believe will help me become a great funeral director in the future. I was able to extract a few great lessons from the work, the first being the fact that all people unconsciously seek a transformative experience. I found that this is an experience that provides deep knowledge but isn’t necessarily accessible to the person until they have that experience.…
In the emotional spoken poem “To This Day” by Shane Coyczan it shows how cruel children can be. In the video made for “To This Day” there is many pieces of evidence but our main focus will be the coffin scene the reason they put this scene in was to show how he was left behind by the people around him. The coffin has some symbolism that we need to get to so let’s start with the coffin. The coffin Symbolizes death to the person inside. In this case the person inside is a kid that has been emotionally hurt by friends, bullies, and life experiences.…
Death. Why do we despise this word so much? Is it because of its effect? Is it because of its meaning? Well, in this story you get to see it’s perspective.…
The material of choice for gravestones today is generally granite, since it is durable and comes in a variety of crystalline textures and colors. Bronze gravestones are also worth mentioning here though, as they are also a popular choice. Whatever the choice of material, gravestone memorials need regular tending in order to maximize their durability and to keep inscriptions as legible as possible. It is also a nice way to show that you are still thinking about the person who has passed away.…
Like Hamlet before it, The Dead Father’s Club is centered around the lack of certainty. While it is a book revolving around the idea of getting revenge, it’s theme is more along the lines of indecisiveness. Philip has countless opportunities to avenge his father’s death, but time and time again he fails to act. Philip poured ethanol into Uncle Alan’s glass of whisky, but chickened out last minute. “I unscrewed the bottle…
When it comes to stories there is usually characters that we follow and get to know along the way, sometimes we only get to meet a character briefly and then there gone, and other times characters can mean more than who they are in a story. Shirley Jackson does just this in the short story “The Lottery” written in 1948. In this short story where the village has an annual lottery that is taken place in the summer to decide who will be stoned to death as a sacrifice for a tradition that might have been used to bring a good harvest. Jackson uses characters and their names as symbols in her story, particularly Mr. Graves his name being an obvious representation of graves. Jackson does this by using Mr. Graves to symbolize the coming of death, at…
A variety of characters make an appearance throughout Shakespeare’s play, Hamlet and all play a role in the overall work of the play. Three minor characters in particular are able to give further understanding on Hamlet’s character and the work as a whole: the gravediggers from Act IV, Yorick from Act IV, and Fortinbras prince of Norway. A minor character differs from major characters because they are more static, appear only briefly in the play with limited dialogue, and the decisions they make do not make a huge impact on the overall plot. The gravediggers and Yorick alike fit this bill perfectly, as they only appear in Act V, Scene 1. They do not grow as characters through more development or changing behavior from the beginning of their…
Religion and culture teaches rituals that family must follow for the preparation of the body for the burial and the funeral service. In some cultures, the wake and time for mourning is a quick process, in others, it can take several weeks before they bury the body. Death is the end, some cultures rejoice others mourn, but between all cultures and religions, it is a time to remember the one who died. The Chinese, Hindu, and Jewish cultures have special requirements guaranteeing the deceased a peaceful passage to the afterlife.…
