Del toro showed the audience that we need to choose when it's okay to disobey and when we should not as sometimes there will be consequences for our choices. This relates back to society today as people try and push their luck even after being warned multiple times not to do something and a lot of the times this comes with consequences. An example of disobedience in history would be Anne Frank, even though Anne knew the consequences of disobeying hitler she still did it. This technique shows the pale man sitting at his table with the fireplace behind him, in this shot you can also see the tall pillars and the checkered floor. The colour scheme is dark reds and browns but although the colours are dark this shot is quite bright. This technique is quite powerful as it relates back to the scene earlier in the film where the captain is sitting at the banquet table with a fireplace behind him. Del Toro did this to show that the pale man and the captain are both seen as villains and are quite similar. Captain Vidal is rationing food during his scene in the film, this relates back to the pale man scene as ofelia was told not to eat any food as there would be consequences.The pale man also has no fear in killing children and as you find out later in the film neither does the captain. Del Toro made the pale man and the captain similar to show that ofelia’s fantasy world is based off her real life. The lighting used in this mise-en scene shot was very bright although Del Toro used dark colours, this is to show that even though her fantasy world is quite dark to her it brings her light and joy. In ofelia's fantasy world nothing can hurt her but in her real world she's easily hurt as she is not in control of every situation she is put in.
