On March 25 at 4:40 PM 159 people were working when a fire broke out in the Asch Building which is located in the heart of New York City. Workers were on the top three floors working overtime to produce shirtwaists when the building became enflamed. 146 people died, and most of them were young women; some were under the age of fifteen. There were 13 survivors; all of them were women. 54 people, in an effort to survive, leaped out of the windows of the ten story building. Unfortunately, their efforts were not successful and fell to their death. One young woman jumped from the ninth floor and got caught on an iron hook. “The city might have a fire as deadly as the one in Newark any time. There are buildings in New york where the danger is every bit as great as in the building destroyed in Newark. A fire in the daytime would be accompanied by a terrible loss of life” he said. Some people expect that the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire tragedy will make everyone realise how much of a “fire trap” New York really is. Since New York hasn’t had as massive of a fire as The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, not many people knew that there was actual potential to have this grand of a fire. The Asch building was actually considered one of the safer buildings when it came to fires. This just goes to show that, no matter what building you’re in, you aren’t fully protected from fires. Now that the public understands that fires can be a huge threat, people are hoping that some good might come out of this tragedy to help enforce better laws. On an ordinary day at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, you could find up to 260 workers crammed on one floor and the exit doors would be locked so that no one could leave; this is a recipe for disaster. Survivors say that the exit doors were locked on the day of the fire when they tried to escape the room. The crowds of people couldn’t have helped the efforts to escape.
