The Things I Carried Out Walcott

The biggest struggle I’ve had to overcome is a personal one. No, I did not have to raise myself out of poverty or stand up to any injustice being committed but for me at least it was a struggle. When I was little I had a terrible stutter/speech impediment or whatever you want to call it. Think of the guy from The Kings Speech but less Royal and without an academy award. I would speak too fast, with a stream of partial words and syllables pouring out of my mouth occasionally tripping up and stopping and stuttering mid-sentence. As you could imagine I was socially inept with no real friends to speak of. And don’t even get me started with girls because that’s a whole failures essay on its own. I had a speech therapist named Mary who confirmed the fear of having a doctor who graduated at the bottom of their class. The sessions were pointless and for all the years in which I endured them I did not improve one iota. After several years of this I gave up. I had resigned to my fate of a life of social mediocrity. This went on for years with the only thing changing would be my increasing waistline and ever increasing volumes of classic literature, films and cookie dough pop tarts consumed in all of my spare time. But all hope was not lost. In my middle school gym class which as you can guess, the combination of socialization and exercise was the bane of my existence, there was this girl (I couldn't believe it either) who actually talked to me and could wade through the gushing rapids full of rocks and words and stuttering make sense of what I was saying and respond. I became infatuated and through months of therapy, meditation and medication I finally got the courage to ask her out on a date. She said “no” I said “why?” and she said “Because you’re fat and you …show more content…
After a few weeks of intense self-pity and numerous packets of pop tarts I saw myself and in the mirror and I said “M-m-maybe s-she’s right”. I decided not for her but for me that I needed to improve myself. Later on I was watching ESPN they were showing a documentary about Heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano. They showed his fight against Jersey Joe Walcott that won him the championship and the two punch combination that knocked out Walcott. The speed, intensity and the confidence in his ability that shone through the grainy black and white footage in my TV told me that’s what I wanted to do. Take up boxing. At that time I was getting my butt handed to me on a regular basis by some other kids and nothing appealed to me more than boxing’s “sweet science” that would teach me confidence and the ability to stand up for myself and to fight back. Also losing a few pounds didn’t hurt either. To fix my speech I had this book full of Presidential speeches that I would read out loud trying to match the dictation and tone of the speaker. Addresses like JFK’s inauguration and FDR’s “we have nothing to fear but fear itself” speech taught me how to form words and say them clearly. I also memorized movie scenes like all of Samuel L Jackson’s lines from Pulp Fiction or Charley Chaplin’s speech in the great dictator to help with my vocal presence and confidence speaking. From boxing led to lifting and wrestling and my speaking

I don’t try to act as too much of a cliche but I can say that I have been overcoming an obstacle for at least three years now. I attend a predominantly caucasian and hispanic institution with only about 20 kids of my ethnicity. I am also a choice student meaning that I attend their school even though I live in a different town. The obstacle I overcome almost everyday and have been for the last three years is representing my culture. Jackie Robinson went into the MLB as the only of his kind and did outstanding things.…

“Ginger” and “little red” and “copper head” and the ever so famous “carrot top” were just a few of many nicknames that once taunted my childhood. It seemed to be that I did not have a name, but rather I was just “the redhead.” Always sticking out like a sore thumb, I was surrounded by a family of dark brown hair and undoubtedly seemed to be the only child in the class with the uncommon genes of fiery red hair, a galaxy of freckles that covered my body, and the fairest of skin that would burn at the slightest of interaction with the sun. As a result of the little resemblance I share with my family, people often mistaken me for someone else’s child or demanded an explanation.…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I improved greatly in athletics and my academic career.…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

Three obstacles I have had to overcome include me being Caribbean-American, a woman, and of the LGBT+ community. Being a first generation Caribbean-American allows me to overcome many challenges because my parents are both immigrants who came to America to receive a better life not only for themselves, but for me and my sister as well. Being a woman is very hard in America being that we are payed less than men and we have been oppressed periodically throughout history and it is just finally starting to change. Lastly I am a part of the LGBT+ which is a huge complication in its own, because many people think that the community just wanted Same-sex couples to be able to be married, but in so many states many people are discriminated for being…

One of the biggest personal challenges I faced was before I moved back to Lawrence I lived in a rural small town on the frontier of Kansas and Oklahoma. I was in Junior high school at the time and the town was very traditional and old-fashioned and having a new student at the time was very seldom to occur. I soon found myself being verbally and even sometimes physically attacked for being the only Native American student in the school district and that was so troubling to me just because I was just trying to get my education to better myself and make friends. My reaction at the time to the event was turning to one of my favorite teachers, he helped me confront the bullies and helped me through my troublesome time. The way he treated me was…

Personal statement The year 2004 marked a time in my family’s history in which we took a substantial step forward by coming to the United States. Before that, we lived through and experienced a lot of unspeakable things. Originating in Somalia, my parents understood that it was a place where nothing could be achieved. Civil war broke out, devastating hundreds upon thousands of lives, including several of my family members. Corruption infected the government, military, and all forms of law enforcement.…

The informative speech I gave on Wednesday about “GM Foods” did not go better than I expected that I could have done because I felt time pressure to organize a verbal outline as closer to written outline. On the topic “GM Foods”, my rhetoric was mainly to inform audiences about negative impact of GM foods on human health. The most difficult part of this informative speech for me is the topic selection. Going through the struggle of finding the topic of large public/audiences interest which can lead to audience inclusion and positive public discourse, I finally found the topic of public concerns/interest but doing research on the topic found all controversial proposition and opposition to the arguments of positive and negative impacts of GM…

Practice makes perfect as everyone has heard this saying before. In the future, I plan on practicing my speeches more by speaking in front of a mirror over and over again to give myself the impression of what I look like when speaking in front of a group of people. Practicing in front of a mirror over and over again will also help me memorize my speech more instead of relying on my note card as often, giving me more confidence while speaking. I tend to use my note card as a comforting thing when I get nervous and forget what I am about to say. It gives me the chance to collect my thoughts and remember what I was going to say as well as staying on track of where I was going in my speech.…
