In the United States, the school serves as a primary institution in regards to the education and socialization of any given community’s children. Over the course of the nearly two-hundred-year history of public education in America, the school has come to replace other significant institutions, such as the church and family, in the daily lives of most students. Children between the ages of 7 and 18 spend a majority of their time in school learning content in addition to being socialized to fit within societal norms. “We cannot provide equal educational opportunity if some children get access to a full and balanced curriculum while others get a heavy dose of basic skills (Ravitch 108).” Using logos, Ravitch makes the audience realize that it is simply unacceptable for a country as advanced as the United States to have such a huge discrepancy in education depending on whether or not you go to a private school. Private schools have the necessary funding in order to offer a wide variety of classes to their students. Public schools get funding from the government and hard economic times have caused their budgets to shrink. With a decreased budget…

Whilst they are largely in agreement concerning the need for further investment in the NHS, and especially mental healthcare, the three party’s views on education in very recent times have become largely incompatible. Under the leadership of Theresa May, the Conservatives announced plans last year to end the ban on ‘selective schooling’ that has been in place since 1998- putting an end to what has been, largely, a cross-party consensus on the nature of education policy throughout the past decade. What May is proposing is to reform currently established schools into traditional grammar schools- to the concern of many who believe this system perpetuates inequality. Contrastingly, in their latest manifesto, the Labour party are proposing the introduction…

In “Teacher Wars,” by Dana Goldstein, I read the first two chapters after I briefly read through each chapter to figure out what appeals to me most. I have done much research on Susan B. Anthony, therefore, I wanted to read that chapter to see if I could discover something new about her or a different perspective. Whereas, I have heard about Catharine Beecher and Horace Mann before, but only briefly. Therefore, I wanted to read that chapter to read who they were and what impact they had on education. Freedom, equality, choice, independence, opinions, rights, and the pursuit of happiness: these are all terms that are commonly associated with the idea of democracy. In order to take a stand on what exactly the purpose of education should be in a democratic society, one must first look at what it is that he or she values in a democracy. To me, the main values of democracy are equality, independence, and choice. Every person in our nation, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status, should have equal opportunity and equal access to an education. No one should be denied an education because of a category or status that they may have been born into or have little control over.…

According to John Taylor Gatto, author of “Against Schools,” the public education system “cripples” the children of today. In the reading, Gatto claims that the public education system causes children to become bored with themselves, to obey the way of the school and its teachers, and lacks to teach them the ability to deal with issues that go on in the real world, outside of school. Moreover, Jean Anyon, author of “From Social Class and Hidden Curriculum of Work,” compares and contrasts the different social class school systems. This includes, working class, middle class, affluent professional, and executive elite. As Anyon goes into detail about the interactions in the classroom between the teachers and the students, it appears that the higher the social class, the better the education provided is.…
