This program was extremely important but was also very costly. A lot of NASA’s money went into this program. In 1961, the budget for NASA went up five hundred percent, which allowed them to employ many brilliant people to start the mission to go to the moon (The space race). The Apollo program is most famous for sending the first men to the moon. Even though the Apollo mission was very successful in many ways, it did have major setbacks. One of the biggest setbacks was the death of three astronauts in a space simulator on January 1967 in the first Apollo mission. But they eventually were able to successfully send the first men into the moon on the Apollo eleven mission on July 20th, 1969 despite this setback. The three famous astronauts that were able to go to the moon were Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins (The space …show more content…
But also had major setbacks that prevented them to be even more successful in space. One of the biggest setbacks they had was the death of Sergey Pavlovich Korolev. He played a huge role in many of the missile and space programs. He was extremely important to the Soviet Union because he had the best expertise in managing the design bureau, talking to the soviet politicians, and making deals with the other designers. But most importantly, had a great vision in space exploration (Siddiqi 517). Sergey Korolev was a great aeronautical engineer an expert on a rockets. (Cavendish, Soviet Union is first to the moon) It took a long time for the Soviet Union to find another good chief designer. Eventfully they found another chief designer by the name of Mishin. They also added three more chief designers in the program and had a total of six chief designers: Barmin, Chelomey, Glushko, Mishin, Pilyguin, and Yangel (Siddiqi
