Even though slavery was abolished many years ago, a numerous amount of people may not know there are still many people that are affected and victims of it today. This slavery is called human trafficking and it is a worldwide problem, even the state of Colorado is impacted greatly. A great number of people do not know the reality of how many individuals are affected by human trafficking; with Denver being one of the major hubs, Colorado citizens need to raise awareness to help end this modern day slavery. The problem is that not enough people are aware of how big the situation with human trafficking has become. 20.9 million people are victims of human trafficking worldwide. That is a lot of people and so many lives that are forever damaged and hurt. Every situation is different, often people think it is only teenage girls that are victims, but anyone can be a victim of human trafficking. Men, women, elders, young children, mothers, immigrants literally anyone and there are so many different ways in which people can become part of human trafficking. Hanging out with the wrong crowd or being a prostitute are not the only ways that can result in being trafficked. This illegal act is also considered to be a huge business that makes billions of dollars. It is estimated to make around $150 billion each year. All of that money is illegal and people are making profits from hurt and injured bodies (“What Is”). That is one of the main reasons why it is so difficult to stop. There are many police officers and other people who are supposedly helping stop this crime when in reality they are invested in the business as well and are being paid to be kept silent. It is so wrong in countless ways and in general very difficult to stop hubs. It is hard to find evidence to stop what is going on and the amount of people usually involved is enormous amount. Some people think it is better to leave it alone then get involved in something like that. Jessa Dillow-Crisp was a victim of human trafficking in Denver, and in her story she explains how, for her, it all began from her family members who sexually abused her ever since she was a little girl. People wondered why she did not just go to the police, but some of her abusers were police officers and threatened to put her into jail if she said anything to anyone. She watched her best friend be tortured and killed right in front of her very eyes. The Colorado Attorney General stated even though many people cannot imagine that such horrible things could happen in this part of the world, it is an immense issue right here in Colorado. The amount of people trafficked has only increased over the years. The victims are not only sexually abused, but are often exposed to drugs. A large amount of immigrants that are promised a bright future in the United States of America end up being trafficked all over the country for a long time, without anyone even thinking that they are missing. With most of their families being in a different country there is little they can do if they do start getting worried and questioning. It is extremely difficult to get evidence for sex labor and it is connected with fear, power, and force factors (McGhee). According to the dictionary, a pimp is “a man who controls prostitutes and arranges clients for them, taking part of their earnings in return” (“Pimp”). Many pimps do not need to tie down or even hide the girls they are abusing, they simply threaten the girls by saying they will hurt their families and loved ones if they say anything. They use fear to control them. Often at times, when a runaway teen comes to Denver within 48 hours they are approached by a pimp.
