Children growing up in this kind of food culture face the most health risks, with child obesity and diabetes becoming more of a problem. All of these issues lead us to wonder what will become of the current food culture in America; where will this all lead regarding health, price, and animal agriculture. It can be easy to just walk into a fast food establishment, order your food, and wait a few minutes until your food is ready. It’s an alternative to going back home and making your own food, which can take forever right? It’s cheaper, more convenient, and filling. In some communities it’s normal to buy those cheap meals; most people are struggling to pay for rent and groceries. Their kids are hungry and the parent might be too tired to make them a nice home cooked meal, but driving them to get a kids meal which is loaded with calories, sodium, and sugar, isn’t a great idea. Children are more likely to become accustomed in wanting to eat out; they will want hamburgers, fries, sodas, and cookies. That is what they’re used to, what they crave. Some might not know but animal agriculture is one of the leading causes for climate change, as stated in Worldwatch, “Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.” The amount is so big because of the demand for more meat, since fast food is so popular now. Jonathan Foer also mentioned in his essay titled Against Meat, “According to reports by the Food and Agriculture organization of the U.N. and others, factory farming has made animal agriculture the No. 1 contributor to global warming… and one of the Top 2 or 3 causes of all of the most serious environmental problems, both global and local…” The more we consume meat the greater the number will get. The fact that eating meat is so popular and has been traced back to our ancestors, makes it a habit that will be difficult to face.
