I enjoyed the variety of the concert the most because there were multiple performers and styles of music from many genres to keep the audience engaged. I enjoyed how they played with expression and had obviously put in tremendous effort to provide such a smooth and enjoyable recital. I would strongly recommend attending a student recital, as the work put in by the students is apparent. Music majors must put on a recital as a requirement for their degree and their performance showcases of years of hard work.
The Pied Piper I. The Spell, by Gordon Jacob was performed by Brianna Bount. The piece has a mysterious mood that the program noted was meant to induce a trance like state. A somewhat wide range is used and plenty of stepwise motion including scales as well as a few leaps are used. Phrases are clearly heard in the piece. It sounds as if there are sentences in the music, separated by pauses or breaths.
Although written in the 20th century, the composer used a clear melody that is more similar to Classical or Baroque styles. The piece is monophonic like many of Hildegard’s as it is a flute solo and has one melody. The Spell is played very rubato and the tempo is not strongly felt. The rubato tempo enhances the mood of the piece by making it sound more mysterious and a bit more unpredictable. A minor tonality also adds to the mysterious feel. There is a wide range of dynamics from piano to forte. Often, the phrases start softly, crescendo into the phrase, then decrescendo at the end, creating a lilt. The changing
