To analyze this I used Shagourys 6 +1 traits which include: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. These traits are assessed from one to six, with six being the highest score. Cole did very well on these traits for this time of year. We will continue to work to improve these skills throughout the year. The first trait I analyzed was Cole’s ideas. I gave him a score of four, which means he is capable of using this trait. He was able to choose a topic and stick with it throughout his writing. He also gave support in his writing and a picture to back up his topic. As his development and support grow he will be able to receive higher scores in this area. Organization is the next trait I analyzed. For this trait I gave Cole a two because his organization is still emerging. His structure and formatting is used correctly throughout his writing. He has not yet begun using transitions or sequencing while writing. These are important elements needed to organize a piece of writing. These concepts are still difficult to grasp for young writers. We will work to improve these during throughout the year. The next trait analyzed was voice. Cole received a three for this trait because he is still developing. He did a fantastic job at expressing his feelings through his words and pictures. Through these he was able to show his individual feelings about rocket ships. Cole is vaguely using audience awareness in his writing. This is preventing him from excelling in this category. This is an area of improvement Cole will be working on in class during the next week. Cole received a four on word choice because he is very capable of using this trait. Although his words were basic he used them all correctly. He even tried out some more difficult words in his piece. As we learn new words Cole will be able to shine in word choice. Sentence fluency was the next trait reviewed in which Cole
