Miley Cyrus Satire

Memes have been created as interesting form of cultural expression. They can appear to be very stupid, and a lot of them are, but they have the ability to make a commentary about what is going on in society whether it’s direct or in direct. Memes are like tiny satires, ridiculing the actions and words of some people in order to make some sort of point or even more often a joke. There are memes about athletes and sports, celebrities, and actions of a more general population (i.e. white girls, Republicans, etc.). The idea is that a phrase or an image is used in conjunction with either an image or phrase that is meant to make fun of the subject.
I found the meme 2b: “Thanks, Obama!” quite funny, not only because of the satire that is played on the emotions of the people who give criticism of the President of The United States but the irony of the subject that is being made fun of, Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus. The meme is intended to poke fun at the republicans who have always and still blame everything on president Obama while following the same concept and blaming Obama for Miley Cyrus’s complete transformation and her actions over the past couple of years. We all know ever since president Barack Obama took the office in 2008 there has been some sarcastic tasteful and distasteful memes blaming what is considered first world problems, minor issues related to the difficulty of living in a first world country, on his presidency . The most popular meme includes the iconic line “Thanks, Obama!” which is a sarcastic expression used by critics of President Barack Obama to blame personal troubles and inconveniences on public policies supported or enacted by the administration. The phrase is often used to caption animated GIFs in which the subject appears to be struggling with a rather simple task, satirizing those who incriminate Obama as the cause of problems for which he has little or no influence. (Know Your Meme) The Origin of this expression is said been first seen on December 17th, 2009, on the conservative political blog Authentic Connecticut Republican published a post highlighting a demotivational poster of a young girl making a “middle finger” gesture with the caption “Thanks, Obama” and from there a series of memes were born.(Know Your Meme: Origin) Ever since the Disney show “Hannah Montana” ended in early 2011 actress and musician Miley Cyrus has been trying to break her good girl image in order to show audience members that there is much more to her than just that long blonde wig.

She has been seen doing things that are way out of the ordinary for goody two shoes Hannah Montana. Miley has been spotted partaking in lude sexual suggestive acts on and off live television and even dabbling in recreational drugs. By saying that she was still “Hannah Montana when bush was president” also gives a comical tone from the view point of audience members who saw former president George W. Bush as just a joke or even viewed his two terms as nothing but a comedic performance. Even though the president has probably never in any way shape or form come in contact with Miley the meme is giving the allusion. that the changes in her are all his fault just like everything else that happens. In Teaching Trayvon, Noble argues about the positive and negative, but mostly negative effects that the mass media’s coverage of Trayvon Martin’s murder garnered. More specifically, Noble provides examples for how the lack of empathy influenced the proliferation of certain narratives in the media in cases of police brutality. One of the biggest examples of this was the “meme-ification” of Trayvon’s death that was not only incredibly crass, but also reflective of past commodification of Black trauma like minstrel shows. Also, Noble argues that this meme-ification being allowed under the guise of free speech and intellectual property is indicative of the strength this dominant narrative can take hold when political, economic, and social, institutions…

Street drugs have always held poor connotations. Anyone who related with them would be immediately recognized as an addict or criminal. That is until opioids and prescription painkillers came around, when your white suburban mom could be just as dependent on a high as your average heroin junkie. I believe if opioids are continually available, other drugs should be legalized, focusing mainly on marijuana. Opioids: legal, completely accessible, and easily prescribed.…

Occasionally I look back on my high school experience and realize I never did a keg stand at a party, I never skipped class to get stoned, and I also never got the guy I had a crush on for three years. Instead, I was studying for that AP government exam, standing in front of my fellow science club members talking about how we can restore our local creek, or working on hitting fastballs for softball. When I catch myself feeling as though I missed out on stereotypical high school or even college experiences I watch a movie not just any movie but a teen comedy. My ideal teen comedy has a group of friends who are about to graduate high school or already have that feel like they missed out on the clique high school experience, in order to gain some…

One ominous morning of 2008 I woke up to a saddened atmosphere. I look around at my parents, who are hardcore republicans, and asked them what was wrong. They said that they had lost the election. My eight year old self replied that they never won because they never ran, and of course they explained that their party lost the run for presidency. For the years to come every time I would look at the news and see a little “R” next to a person name I would know that they are the “good guys”.…
