The idea that we all grow up predispositioned to get back to a certain weight is something that I feel like could help a lot of people who are considering fad diets, but it’s also clear that there is a way to monitor and control your “set point” and also your children’s. If you start out with breastfeeding you are lowering their risk for obesity and diabetes not only because the milk is more nutrient dense than many formulas, but also because you are allowing the child to control how much they’re eating. If I were to adopt a baby, I feel it is really useful to know how to consider an appropriate amount of formula to give them as well, as I wouldn’t be able to breastfeed. My dad has sleep apnea, and he grew up as what we would consider today an obese child, he was also tall for his age, which I didn’t know goes hand in hand with childhood obesity. As long as he can remember he’s been getting his blood sugar tested because of his weight and family history of diabetes, but when I talked to him about this, even he didn’t realize that he might have been set up to develop sleep apnea from a young age. Also, the acanthosis nigrocans that Dr. Ponder showed many photos of, my sister had that growing up because she was also an obese child, but we never knew what it was she still has the scarring from when she tried to scrub it off. There are so many warning signs that I have seen in my lifetime that I had no idea were warning signs at all, but now equipped with this new information I feel that I can see them in the future if I need
