Americans have begun to accept the stigma from the rest of the world that we are very needy people and need to be the most efficient as possible. A study conducted by GMI Research shows that 80% of Americans want to be efficient (New Study Reveals, 2016). We must always ensure our shipment of goods arrives at its destination on time and quickly. “With the development of Advanced Travelers Information Systems (ATIS), short term travel time predictions is becoming increasingly important” (Chien and Chen 2001a,b). The study done by Chien and Kuchipudi, 2003 shows that in order to become efficient in areas such as travel time, shipment of goods and location tracking, it is imperative that a base line of data is gathered to see how exactly a business can expedite the process. Due to the fluctuations in traffic at various times of the day due to weather, road construction or lots of motorist, businesses have recognized the need to accurately predict travel times through the use of traffic management systems and route guidance systems. Predicting travel time will ultimately reduce shipping time and give the customer an updated status on its goods. The study titled “Dynamic Travel Time Prediction with Real-Time and Historic Data” conducted by Chien and Kuchipudi, depicts the idea of how various travel times based on routes and traffic environment affects the transportation network. It was formerly assumed that travel time prediction could be figured out through mathematical formula calculating speed, volume and occupancy data. The theory was that this math problem gives inaccurate data. Using a quantitative method approach, their objective was to “develop dynamic models that can efficiently predict travel times with real-time and historic data” (Chien and Kuchipudi, 2003). The terms linked based and historic path based were used as the two categorized factors. Path-based is when a vehicle completes a specific path based on entry and exit; Link-based is the sum of travel times of vehicles in the consecutive links that make up the whole path. The study observed different prediction models by using road side terminals that were used along a stretch of road that was 10.57 miles long with a total of eight on-ramps and five off-road ramps. The terminals were placed at intervals along the route. Using historic data and real-time data provided by the Transportation Operations Coordinating Committee, they were able to capture data from vehicles entry and exit time with EZ passes that passed through road side terminals for a total of eighteen days. The research concluded that historic path-based data used for travel time prediction is better than link-based data. The design of the study adequately addressed the problem statement of the research. The authors were coming up with a viable solution to better travel time predictions. This was used through historic and tested data. Various methods were used to gather the required information. The study had effective and problematic areas. The effective area of the study was how the authors obtained real time data. The design of the study was comprised of EZ passes, road side terminals and a sector of highway to gather data. The sector of road was mapped out into two different road analysis. This real time data was cross referenced with historic data to reveal which method had the better travel time predictions. Finally a computer program with specific requirements helped remove outliers and biased data. The problematic area, in my …show more content…
Research is a very time consuming ordeal that takes a lot of preparation time. It becomes occasionally becomes an ‘art form’ because of why we have to do things in a particular order. In order to have a good grasp on the solution one is finding, we must read and comprehend multiple literature reviews in order to have good and sufficient data that backs up our reason to conduct a study. We must analyze data and make unbiased predictions and conclusions. We have to make sure every problem that is intended for research has a solution and an explanation of it. When looking at research methods, there are multiple ways to tackle a problem within the qualitative and quantitative categories. There may not be a wrong way, but there is a more efficient or better way to conduct a research. Depending on what kind of research is being done, it may require the researcher to do more than one type of research
