Reflective Essay: The Special Education Field

Improved Essays
The Special Education field is a brand-new field to me. I am currently subbing at Special Ed (SpEd) class in San Bernardino School District. This is my first time subbing for a SpEd class. I am also new to the SpEd credential program. I first started school in the Multiple subject credential program hoping to be a Kindergarten teacher. In 2014, I got hired as an instructional assistant for an RSP teacher. I had been an instructional assistant for general education class, but working with the RSP teacher, I learned that this is where my heart was. I realized that I had a heart for those who needed extra support or learn things differently from others students. My biggest success is following my heart and my heart is for those who need someone …show more content…
I have encountered students that have emotional meltdowns, highly defiant, short attention spans, articulation problems. I have been challenged in multiple ways. I have gone home crying, feeling like I did not do my very best, but as days went on, I gained student rapport and now I can see I am breaking through to them. The staff has noticed that I have had a positive impact in my students, they are hardly in the office now. It has been difficult for this class since the main teacher has been out most of the school year, plus having multiple subs coming into their class. These students where in need of stability and consistency. I have been the only sub that has been consistent in that class, I was offered to stay until the lead teacher comes back from medical leave. I was in class teaching when I received the call, I let the students know I was going to stay till their teacher returned and they all cheered with glee. I love walking into school, greeting the office staff, walking into my classroom to I prepare for the day. What I most enjoy is being greeted with many hugs from my students as they all call out, “Mrs. G, Mrs. G!” I strongly believe that being a Special Education teacher is a calling from God. A person truly needs to have a heart for their students. These students are in need of good role models and positivity. I am eager to finish my credential program so that I can have my own classroom. I want to continue living this amazing experiences and helping my students

These students have enough negativity; without adding more stress to an already stressful situation. I believe that the teacher sets the tone for the classroom atmosphere; fostering an atmosphere that embodies: motivation, compassion, and making mistakes as a method of learning. I also believe that the teacher can help these students view their failures in a new manner. Instead of dwelling on what the student struggles with, dwell on the strengths of the student. Reward small gains, for these small steps will have the student traveling down the right path…

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

    1. Feelings I had about my experiences and what I did or observed today: I went into this field with a somewhat negative mindset. I was very upset about how far the school was from my house and heard negative opinion on this field experience. However, when I left Lafayette Elementary I had a completely different mindset. I really like the teacher I am assigned and love the dynamics of a resource classroom.…

Unless services cannot be successful in the general education classroom, they should be with their nondisabled peers 80 to 90 percent of the time (Department of Education, 2004). Articles and colleagues criticize special education for limiting students, through the “parallel structure” of special education (Artiles et al., 2006, p. 261). Traditionally special education teachers had their own separate classroom where the student would go to for the whole or part of the school day and this is still a basic set up for special education. Now special education teachers spend part of their time in the general education classroom either helping just their specific students or teaching alongside the teacher. All students in the classroom can benefit from co-teaching, but when implemented effectively it is shown to have the greatest benefit for special education students.…

Before taking this course and being out in the field for 20 hours, special education was not my ideal teaching job. Special education was always intimidating to me because there is so much important information that is needed. IEP’s, parents, and goal setting are just a few to name that intimidated me until now. After getting to experience being in a special education room with the students and asking Nicole Degroot questions about these topics, I now I feel that special education may be the positon for me. From the first day of my observation hours, Mrs. Degroot made me feel completely welcome and comfortable, which made the experience that much better.…

As a special education teacher candidate, my belief about special education is that it is necessary for all students with disabilities that are not academically successful. The role of special education in the schools is to provide students with special needs, an education that is a free, appropriate, public education in the least restrictive environment. Students need to be educated in the setting where their needs are met and they can be most academically successful. My role as a special educator is to provide accommodations and modifications to help the student reach academic success. I believe students learn in a variety of ways.…

The many challenges the school systems faced was having enough teachers and resources to accommodate the growing number of students admitted into the Special Education system. The ongoing problem that the Special Education department has faced is staffing enough teachers to accommodate a child with a disability. Many schools lack funding or may be in a low income area that is plagued with poverty and this discourages opportunities for teaching positions to be filled. The school systems are overburdened and children are lost through the laws and guidelines that have been put in place (Mason& Williams…
