The Importance Of The Death Penalty In Texas

Decent Essays
Because Texas is one of the most heavily populated states in the country, I am not shocked that Texas ranks number one in the number of prisoners. Texas has more inmates than California who has a larger population than our state. The prisons in Texas are very overcrowded. Texas is one of the states in the country that imposes the death penalty. The state reserves the death penalty to those who commit criminal homicide such as murdering a peace officer, firefighter, murder for hire and murder of murder of a child under the age of 6. According to our textbook, the state of Texas has executed 470 inmates convicted of murder from 1982- the middle of 2011. The number of executions has declined per year. I believe that the system isn't working as

The justice system in Texas seems a bit unjust to because the it has more emphasis on money rather than hate. Murder is murder, and for whatever reasons it happend it must be justified by having the murderer punished, towards a certain extent. Now, the situation with Texas' justice system is that the punishment seems unfit for the crime. A murderer may suffer the death penalty for killing someone for their money, but if the murderer wants to kill someone because he/she hates him/her, it's just life without parole. This means killing because of money is more serious than killing because of hate or just wanting to kill.…

On one issue, Texas culture and tradition had influence the views of Texas judges on the death penalty. In fact, judges would often implement decisions and punishments based on a justice system that discriminated against certain races rather than a justice system based on evidence and reason to convict criminals. Racial bias is the opinionated view that a society has uses to assigns certain positive or negative traits to a race so that one can categorize them as either lower or higher in society. These stereotypical beliefs were set up during the time of the European enlightenment where philosophers had categorized races to use them has slaves and servants so that Europeans may maintain control for economic and social reasons like labor or…

The death penalty case cost is about 2.3 million and three times more expensive than the cost of 40-year incarceration in a highest security facility. In comparison to Florida with 24 million cost per execution, North Carolina 2.16 million, and 4 billion in California for 13 people executed in total. Tax payers’ money is used to subsidize these endeavors. However, the death penalty in Texas is going to continue in place for many years, especially because when judges are elected they are already expected to hand down tough penalties in order to get re-elected, and also because the attorneys appointed by the court on capital murder cases have little or no experience handling these kind of…

As John Morrison exclaimed,“It should be clear that the death penalty does just the opposite of promoting decency and respect for life... It can never be applied fairly.” Since the mid nineteenth century, inmates on death row have been murdered by a plethora of gruesome methods, such as venomous lethal injections, gas chambers, and electrocution. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, there have been 1,413 executions in the United States from 1976 to the present. Although the number of death penalty verdicts are decreasing, flaws in the American judicial system have caused an increase in the amount of punishing wrongfully accused suspects to the death penalty.…

The massive prison numbers pose one of the state of Texas biggest problems. I see this problem as one that is not being addressed which causes my question to arise; “With a problem so massive, what is being done to help the ones affected? Where along the line of correction can Texas make a change in favor to reform prisons or the policies that so many citizens are subject to? Is the issue of the Texas department of corrections one that is purposely being left unanswered?” On one end of the scale that is Texas criminal justice; those whom commit acts with criminal intent need to be punished.…

The 1970’s brought with it ‘tough-on-crime’ policies, which created a shift in the judicial system from the previous model of predominantly crime control to a punitive model that increased incarceration rates and sentences. This new model and policies created an overall overcrowding in the local jails, state and federal prison system, costing states and local government millions of dollars. This journal specifically looks at incarceration systems in the state of Texas and the costs associated with overcrowded facilities. Texas offers a unique perspective as the entire state was the first to look at alternative methods of punishment than that of imprisonment. The authors both have the credentials to perform the study and no obvious bias is apparent.…

I’ve never struggled with that at all. The state of Texas has a very thoughtful, a very clear process in place of which – when someone commits the most heinous of crimes against our citizens, they get a fair hearing, they go through an appellate process, they go up to the Supreme Court of the United States, if that’s required. But the state of Texas, if you come into our state and kill one of our children, you kill a police officer, you’re involved with another crime and you kill one of our citizens, you will face the ultimate justice in the state of Texas, and that is, you will be executed. I believe that if someone takes an innocent life it should be a life for a life.…

Texas, who has the highest execution rate, is used to determine whether or not the executions in this state are effective in deterrence of crime. Richard Dieter feels that the execution rate in Texas is a crisis (1994). Numerous offenders who have been sentenced to the death penalty have been later found innocent of the crimes they were accused of committing. The death warrants are signed so quickly that the investigations are not given a fair amount of consideration. During trials the corrupted prosecutors, unreliable medical “experts”, and perjured testimonies have led to false imprisonment of many people.…

The rebirth of the death penalty in 1976, marked a history, that would consist of a long debate and controversial on its moral principles. Currently, there are 271 inmates on death row, just in Texas alone. Mostly men, commit capital offenses, which is the only way for they to be sentenced to death. They have to go through a lengthy trial, once sentenced, to be able to appeal the decision. The isolation, and the pain an inmate may go through while the deadly mix flows through his or her veins, raise many eyebrows, with people constantly questioning whether it is a violation to the eighth amendment.…

Texas leads the nation in a high number of executions and has the third largest death row after California and Florida. Although people commit harsh crimes such as murder I strongly disapprove of the death penalty. The death sentence does not deter crime, does not bring glee to the family members of the lost souls, it does not stop potential criminals nor does it prevent public safety. I was always taught growing up that two wrongs does not make it right. Texas should abolish the death penalty do to judges’ falsely sentencing and executing innocent people because in my opinion Texas is a racist state.…

Crimes found in the Penal Code are the traditional ones like assault, theft, among others. But nearly every other section of Texas law defines criminal acts. In the U.S. incarceration is one of the main forms of punishment, rehabilitation, or both for the commission of felony and other offences as per Wikipedia write-up on Incarcerations in the United States.
