Let 's get right to it. The goal of any business, including the one your boss is running, is to create new customers. To create new customers, every business needs to do 5 things. First, customers need to know you exist. Second, is to get customers interested in you and your product/service. Third, is to get customers to want your product/service. Fourth, is to have customers buy your product/service. Finally, is to have customers to return. Do these 5 steps sounds familiar? They should, I just explained the standard marketing funnel. Wouldn 't your boss be surprised to know that this is exactly what social media does.

Social media is unique from other forms of marketing because it gives brands the ability to direct consumers into the marketing funnel in an authentic manner while building genuine emotional connections with the brand. Other forms of marketing such as print ads, banners, emails, radio spots have yet to be able to do this. No disrespect, but except for maybe your boss and that person living in a tiny hut, on a tiny island with no internet service, everyone is on social media. Ok, maybe not everyone but a major portion of today 's consumers. There are just over 3 billion active Internet users (Source:WeAreSocial.Net) Nearly 2.1 billion people have social media accounts (Source: WeAreSocial.Net) 3.65 billion mobile users have access to the internet via smartphones and tablets (Source: WeAreSocial.Net) Close to 1.7 billion people have active social media accounts (Source: WeAreSocial.Net) 80% of marketers indicate that their social media efforts have increased traffic (Source: Hubspot) 53% of Americans who follow brands in social are more loyal to those brands (Source: EdisonResearch) This list of statistics could literally go on for pages. If your boss is a numbers person click on each source to get about 100 more. Still need more than these statistics? No problem, below are several talking points to convince your boss the value of utilizing social media and the loss of not. 1. Make it clear to your boss that social media is a way of increasing sales, and given the opportunity and time, you will be able to demonstrate the success of implementing a social media strategy.

8. SOCIAL MEDIA: IT REQUIRES A STRATEGY

Before walking into your boss ' office create a social media strategy. First, it shows that you are committed and second it lays out answers to questions your boss is sure to have. In your strategy include items such as your goals, how much time it will take, and what social media sites you want to venture in (where your target audience is obviously). There are many free social media strategy templates online. Check out HootSuite and Uptown Studios for their free social media strategy templates.

Armed with the above statistics and these talking points, your boss will ask you why haven 't you asked
