One of the major concerns among school board members nationwide is school nutrition. Nutrition is the process by which organisms take in and utilize food material changing it to living tissues. Do schools or school board members understand the whole scope of nutrition or the impact good nutrition has on our children in their meals they receive on a daily basis? Since the late 1900’s, nutrition in schools has become a nationwide social and economic issue. There are many reason nutrition has caused a red flag for parents, doctors and administrators all across the United States. “School superintendents can collaborate with agents from local governments and various community organizations such as the American Association of School Administrators and National School Boards Association to implement innovative policies and programs, which help prevent and reduce childhood obesity” (Li, Hooker, 2010, p. 102). Schools who implement school nutrition programs should also have teachers and administrators participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). If the whole community can get everyone on board with these programs, then superintendents could potentially strive for a better strategy to bring healthier foods into our local schools. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “Schools are identified as a key setting for public health strategies to lower or prevent the prevalence of overweight and obesity” (Story, Nanney, Schwartz, 2009, p. 72). Vending machine snacks that are not beneficial to student’s health, and can be placed in the competitive foods category, should be replaced with healthier snack options. All of these options are feasible in any community or school district. School nutrition should not be an issue only discussed during a school board meeting, this is an issue that should be tackled in classrooms, corporate meetings and homes. Teachers and community leaders can participate in training students in the growing their own gardens, like many schools have already done. School nutrition programs can be the solution to poor school nutrition and in many cases reduce childhood obesity and improve the lifestyle in children.
