Growing up in rural Upstate New York, I can remember how quite often my mother and father would repeatedly tell me and my brother that “patience is a virtue”. Granted this counsel, was often repeated during times of impatience and frustration. As a young child, it brings to my remembrance many experiences of sharing toys with my brother, wanting and waiting for the sharp edge of my popsicle to be cut off with scissors, or the endless “Are we there yet’s?” of our summer family road trips. I have not forgotten this sweet and tender phrase my loving parents taught me as a child. Those four simple words have stuck with me throughout many experiences in my life and have been a testament to me that patience is a virtue and an attribute of Jesus Christ. As disciples of Jesus Christ and members of His church we need to be patient in our trials, with others, and finally patient with ourselves.

We need to treat others with an attitude of patience: “You need patience in your everyday experiences and relationships, especially with your companion. You must be patient with all people, yourself included, as you work to overcome faults and weaknesses” (“Preach My Gospel” 120). It is important to remember that not everyone we work with is at the same spiritual level and stamina that we are individually. Where we are talented others may struggle greatly. We need to be patient with others with which we interact and teach because we need to be actively striving to become like Christ, not just do Christ like things.
