Jre`ne Rahm directed attention to another issue that we may face as educators when she stated Unfortunately, there is typically little time for such kinds of projects and scaffolding on part of the teacher that could result in the kind of genuine learning described in the regular, fast paced curricula of schooling with an emphasis on performance and high stakes testing rather than a celebration of hybridity and students’ funds of knowledge. (Rahm, 2008, p. 118) To me, this implies that the emphasis on achievement and testing places limits on the time that we need to focus on, or as Rahm stated “celebrate” the hybridity and funds of knowledge of our students. This may be an issue if were are striving for an equitable education for all. From…

The mixed scanning decision making framework was chosen for guiding the development of this policy. The mixed scanning framework provided the opportunity to isolate the necessary information thru filters that would allow for different views; narrow in scope for fundamental alternatives, but broad for incremental decisions. Because the information-gathering for this issue would uncover abundant information when searching for a particular scenario - but also reveal the need for more unique information due to the possibility of multiple variables, the inclusion of strategies from both the rational and the incremental approach allow for different views. The fundamental decision was prompted by the challenge of finding a way to incorporate classroom observation opportunities among building staff in order to develop relationships and an environment that would support instructional growth thru observation, conversation, mentoring and reflection.…

In conclusion, creativity is one of the most important qualities that humans possess, yet it is sometimes undermined in today’s school system. Some people are naturally more “imaginative” than others and that is why teacher collaboration with creative professionals is often key to encouraging and nourishing a healthy and creative classroom atmosphere. When students are pushed to think outside the box, they will continue to do so outside the classroom. This “domino effect” leads to personal growth, and creative problem solving in real world scenarios, which is a desirable trait in the business and economic…

Maria Montessori is a strong believer in and an advocate for freedom in the classroom. She found it of utmost importance to maintain and nourish each child’s unique aptitude towards learning. Her theory is that the teacher must study the child individually noting his or her talents and weaknesses before acting as a guide to their specific endeavors. She strongly denounced a dictatorship-style classroom. One point she makes that I find intriguing is that “prizes and punishments are . . .…
