How Did Poe Respond To The Fall Of The House Of Usher

The Fall of The House of Usher, was not a disappointment. The short story was another tale that Edgar Allen Poe captured his gloomy, dark, and unsettling way. At times I am thankful that I left the lights on while reading this story right before bed as I am easily prone to bad dreams. From the beginning, of the first paragraph I was entrapped by Poe’s description of his ride to the House of Usher. His descriptive words make the picture so clear in my mind that I can almost see myself riding alongside him. Yet, at the same time I can apply his descriptions to a day that reminds me of the same dreaded feeling that Poe was writing about. Poe states in the first sentence of the story; the whole of a dull, dark, and soundless day, when the clouds hung oppressively low in the heavens remind me of the day that we buried my own grandfather. It seemed to have been such a dull and dark day with cloud cover to mask the brightness of the sun. The weather seemed to match our moods and it was so quite everyone afraid to drop their brave façade in fear of just completely breaking down into tears. The Fall of The House of Usher is about mental illness, death, emotions and internal conflict which is basically the definition of Gothic literature. The House of Usher, tells the story of a man with a mental illness that invites a man to help and provide companionship through his last days on earth. During the friends stay, the man entombs his own sister while still alive with the help of his friend under pretenses that she is dead from an illness.
