Their sounds are playing in most of the gift shops but if you listen carefully, you might be able to track one down and see it. The Coquí is even the national animal; it is a prized creature in Puerto Rico and loved by everyone. There are over 17 types of Coquí on the island. It is the biggest frog in Puerto Rico it reaches a weight of 2-4 ounces and 1-2 inches long (National Wildlife Federation). This frog eats arthropods, smaller frogs and even small lizards; they are a key component of the food chain in Puerto Rico. The biggest predators to the Coquí are the giant crab spiders, snakes, and birds. Their egg predator is the fly. The Coquí is part of the Puerto Rican life, not just for getting rid of arthropods and other pest, but for the culture itself, the people even say ‘"Soy de aquí como el coquí" (I 'm as Puerto Rican as a coquí)”(Rivera 2016). That it is a species that needs to be protected and even though it is a pest it still is beneficial to each environments that it lives in. Conservation actions need to happen in both Puerto Rico and in Hawaii. Both are going to look very different, but in Hawaii they are different needs that need to be met like the conservation of their plant life, but as well as the Coquí because it is an animal. The government, scientist and crop owner a need to figure out a way to safe and effective way to protect the plants in Hawaii but also the Coquí’s as soon as possible. In Puerto Rico they need to figure out a way to protect the Coquí because it is decreasing in number. The government is trying their best but actions need to take place they need to figure out a way of how to get the Coquí population out of threaten and not even on the list anymore. How to accomplish all of this is informing and by taking action as a society to stand for the Coquí and educating the population on the topic of the Coquí and how to conserve the ecosystem as a whole (Kricher 1997). All creatures are key to the life cycle on earth, even if in some people eyes they are viewed as a pest but to others they are valued in they are still key components in each ecosystem and need to be conserved for future generations to come.
