North Carolina Environmental Impacts

Improved Essays
The environmental aspects of the state of North Carolina are unlike any other; varying from the ecosystems of the coast to those of the mountains in the west. With such diversity, North Carolina is bound to attract throngs of people, which it does. This vast population requires the use of natural resources, and in order for long-term civilization to be feasible, sustainability must be kept in mind. As previously stated, North Carolina is hosts a multitude of different ecosystems. There are, however, three major subdivisions. On the eastern side of the state lies the coastal plain region. In the center of the state, the piedmont area resides. Far to the west, the mountain takes over. Though each of these areas each have their own characteristics, …show more content…
Since the time of Native Americans, the earth's resources have been used, typically in ways which have negative impacts. One major negative impact is the threat to biodiversity which humans pose. With the urbanization of the state, combined with the results of such urbanization, biodiversity is in severe danger. When biodiversity is limited, the negative effects are not only spread to those organisms which are immediately affected. The loss of biodiversity has tremendous negative effects on human life as well. Many medicines, for example, are derived from plants. When such plants are threatened by the loss of biodiversity, the health of the citizens are as well. Biodiversity also provides a type of "cushion" when natural disasters occur. The diversity of organisms makes extinction more difficult, and without it, minor tragedies can cause immense damage. Biodiversity is the key to stability and must be preserved whenever …show more content…
The current manner of deriving energy and overall way of life employed by man today cannot and will not be feasible in the future. Steps must be taken in order to secure resources for future generations. One resource for which major concern exists is water. With a very small portion of the earth's water being fresh, it is crucial that measures are taken to preserve it. One simple remedy to this issue is to take shorter showers. By taking shorter showers, not only is water conserved by not using it, but less water requires cleaning, a difficult process. Another way to keep water from requiring intense cleaning is to refrain from disposing harmful chemicals by means of a drain. Many cities offer harmful chemical disposal opportunities, making it easy for citizens to help keep their environment clean. Another major concern in terms of sustainability is that of air quality. What with the manufacturing and automobile pollutants, the quality of the air in North Carolina is indeed at risk. A great way for an average citizen to reduce air pollution is to carpool. By riding together, the amount of pollution is reduced. Better yet, riding a bicycle or walking eliminates air pollution

Geologically, Greensboro is situated at the headwaters of the Cape Fear River Basin, the biggest of the 17 noteworthy waterway bowls in North Carolina. The Reedy Fork Creek and Buffalo Creek bowl (Figure 1) in Greensboro are framed from precipitation that keeps running off impenetrable and pervious surfaces, and from water that leaks up from neighborhood springs and in the long run winds up in the Ocean, only south of Wilmington, NC. The bowl is situated in a move zone between warm-mild and sub-tropical atmospheres and fits in with a warm-calm, semi-damp mainland atmosphere with cool and parched winters and warm and moist summers. The yearly high and low temperatures are 69.3°F to 48.8°F and the precipitation in the zone midpoints around 42.36inches…

For a multitude of reasons, the management philosophy became outdated and failures developed - the old paradigms were insufficient to meet the changing realities faced by federal agencies. By the 1990s, federal policymakers, land managers, and environmental scholars conceptualized and suggested a new paradigm - ecosystem management - to correct prior deficiencies in light of changing ecological, legal and political realities for federal land and resource management and its respective federal agencies. In Federal Ecosystem Management, James R. Skillen, an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at Calvin College, notes that the new paradigm of ecosystem management would address and correct prior failures through a three-pronged framework of land and resource management integration across factitious jurisdictional boundaries, amelioration of the conflict between biodiversity protection and economic development, and re-structure the process of federal management by making it more collaborative and less hierarchical. Skillen’s narrative traces the emergence of ecosystem management as official federal policy, how it was shaped into two distinct models by federal environmental…

I think that the diversity of the plants has to do with keeping the environment sustainable and livable for everything that lives in it. Plants support each other, the animals in the environment, and the habitat itself. 2. Bison were a huge source of food, and were big with helping cultivate the land for crops and farming. Had they gone fully extinct, I think there would have been a lot of people suffering and starving without the support and help that Bison gave to them.…

Most people do not realize how much water is wasted each year. Even though there is plenty of water to go around for everyone and everything at this moment, there will come a time when humans will need to make serious adjustments in the way they use water. Anita Hamilton, Sandra Postel, and Maude Barlow demonstrate in their articles that they are concerned about water management. They also give examples of how our water is wasted. While Hamilton assumes humans are the only lives on earth that need it to survive, Postel argues that humans should consider water rights for other species on the planet.…

The Chartiers Creek watershed is located in southwestern PA and flows north for 52.4 miles through Allegheny and Washington counties. It has two sections: the upper section that is mostly located in Allegheny county, and the lower section in north/central Washington county. It’s overall size is approximately 227 square miles and it discharges into the Ohio river at McKees Rocks. Chartiers Creek’s water is utilized for agricultural, recreational, and domestic purposes (Dunkle, 2016). The upper portion supports around 68,500 people (there is a total of 36 public water supply wells) while the lower portion supports about 600,000.…

Others claim that saving the species will also save the land. They argue that as species flourish so will the areas around them. However, that is not the case. Areas like the “sagebrush sea” are “home to over 300 species of wildlife” (McEnaney 54). The “sagebrush sea” was greatly impacted by “drilling, livestock grazing, mining, and wind energy development” (55).…

Humanity’s relationship with nature periodically shifts between symbiotic and parasitic. We feed off nature in order to survive, and in exchange, we carefully monitor how our behavior affects the environment and the organisms within it. Responsibility is the price we pay for dominance and sentience. To help fulfill this duty, the United States government established the Wilderness Act in 1954 with the intention of becoming passive “guardians” of nature instead of encroaching “gardeners.” Countless acres of wild lands, henceforth referred to as the “wilderness,” were declared off-limits to American industry and placed under federal oversight; the United States hoped that at least some small portion of nature could be free from the influence…

Biodiversity is the measurement of how abundant variety of species is the population in an ecosystem. Habitats are greatly amplified by how many different species populate the area as the interconnectivity of food chains influences how well an ecosystem works. Not only does biodiversity effect specific ecosystems, it provides for humans as the value of global ecosystem services is estimated at $16-$64 trillion [1] meaning that reduction of biodiversity will result in major financial losses. A reduction of biodiversity effectively means a less profitable system because less is never more and removal of certain components in ecosystems will result in cataclysmic effects to all parts of that food chain as reduction of certain species will result…

Due to the lack of predators that view unfamiliar organisms as a source of energy, invasive species possess the advantage of survival; hence invaders are prone to overpopulate, overtake native species, and deplete limited resources. On the surface, the issue may be viewed as dealing specifically with only one single ecosystem, but in reality the process ends with considerable amounts of native species losing the competition for essential resources, native species nearing the point of extinction, and the destruction of countless interlinked ecosystems. As mentioned in the article, Invasive Species, “approximately 42% of Threatened or Endangered species are at risk primarily due to invasive species.” Regarding this, invasive species are revealed to be responsible for eventual human extinction due to their contribution to the removal of biodiversity. Emphasizing the situation, biodiversity is the sole reason behind human survival because the availability of different species allows humans to have numerous sources involved in the provision of nutrients.…
