It may be surprising too many but the different effects that physical activities have on stress management in college freshmen has become a controversial topic in many universities over the past years. In the journal article “The Effect of Physical Activity on the Stress Management, Interpersonal Relationships, and Alcohol Consumption Of College Freshmen,” Simone Wilson, skillfully presents her findings in three sections. She presents her first section by briefly sharing the stylistic development of physical activity and college students, and how it forms and how it is alarming since students develop their health behaviors in college. Simone Wilson also goes into depth suggesting how female freshman that transition from home to college how and why their physical activities decreased. Hence, Wilson (2012), stated physical activities is also affected by many other factors including race and ethnicity, and that these two combined are correlated with physical intentions. (p.2) Simone Wilson presents in the other sections in the form of an article in which she shares her arguments and analysis on how the common stressors that create unhealthy behaviors and reduce physical activity for college students specifically freshmen include family events, social life, academic load, work and campus residency. This paper will review “The Effect of Physical Activity on the Stress Management, Interpersonal Relationships, and Alcohol Consumption Of College Freshmen,” by Simone Wilson as well as her main findings, and will evaluate the quality of Simone Wilson writing and selected aspects and focus on areas of strengths and weaknesses within the article. Summary This section contains a summary of The Effect of Physical Activity on the Stress Management, Interpersonal Relationships, and Alcohol Consumption Of College Freshmen. The author begins the article by stating that her purpose in writing the article is to examine the disparities between how stress may directly affect health behaviors as well how alcohol consumption within the first year of college can lead to many health outcomes. Thus, she does this by presenting facts and details based on her studies of interviewing 167 freshmen and her experience and documentary research. Simone Wilson then goes on to describe key factors of how she examined the effects of physical activity, interpersonal relationships, and stress management, alcohol consumption in college freshmen. Furthermore, she states, that studies suggest that for college freshmen students who exercise more exhibit lower levels of stress. Hence, the next form of reducing stress that was extensively studied, suggested that those students who are physically active are shown to consume less alcohol. Thus, this is important because by being more physically active and those who experience more social support have shown to have a smaller amount of stress during their first year of college. Carrying further, the articles opening informs the reader what she will be analyzing in the article. The essay style is extremely informative and uses a conversational tone in the article to convey her point. Furthermore, the article is constructed in a way of enhancing the relationship with the audience, by providing different descriptions that will draw on the reader’s attention and imagination. Hence, the imagery that Simone Wilson creates in the telling of the article captivates the reader attention and keeps them with her until the end. Thus she does this by using some statically data and other similar studies that were found by other studies done before. Equally important she makes the article more personal and generates emotion in the reader by doing so. The author establishes authority on her relied data through the years of fieldwork and documentary research to support her claims of the reinterpretations and innovations of other larger studies samples that also examined the relationship between physical activity in college students and stress management.
