In marriages couples, can have an abundant of problems. These sexual problems typically are a result of abuse, guilt, and physical issues. These problems should be view with all seriousness, because this puts stress on the marriage. By being educated on this topic will help couples to understand one another, along with understanding the sexual gratification. When a partner is not aware of what a mate been through, this may lead to avoidance of sex or even connecting with your mate (Miles, 2005). This unconscious avoidance will lead to guilt, and anger. Guilt will hinder the couple from enjoying sexual encounters. In addition, guilt can come out when one of the mates are unfaithful. When anger is in a relationship it too will add to the stress level of the marriage (Penner & Penner,2003). Consequently, lack of self-worth is another type of unconscious avoidance. This negative self-worth stems from or physical appearance, parental responsibility, or our competency as a provider, and because of this it may lead to avoidance. It is imperative to note, “Since guilt, anger, and the lack of self-worth are unconscious way of avoiding sex, we naturally will not be aware of them” (Penner & Penner, 2003). High level of stress in put on a marriage couple’s sex life when sexual anxiety is present. This sexual anxiety comes from the pressure of failing. Some examples of failing for women is when she can’t get aroused, or if she can’t have an orgasm. For men, this pressure of failing comes from not being able to have an erection, and having premature ejaculation (Penner & Penner, 2003). In addition, the need to please adds pressure to a marriage. Also, blocked erotic feelings causes a mate to not enjoy sex, and the response is typically negative. Furthermore, past traumatic experiences hinders a positive freedom. Traumatic experiences like molestation, and rape as a child with often confuse a person. This trauma tends to stay attach to sexual encounters. Subsequently, this should be addressed in a counseling setting. Clifford and Joyce states, “When sex isn’t working, the bedroom tends to become a sober place” (Penner & Penner, 2003). When a couple makes a conscience effort to be transparent, then they will be able to overcome any obstacle. When two becomes one in marriage, differences could plague the marriage. There are basic differences. This is when one of the partner need for sex is different. Then there are energy differences. Energy differences is when the relationship is settle, one partner because of time restraints may or may not have the energy for sex. Then there are fulfillment differences. Fulfillment differences is when a mate is not fulfilled during sex so this will create a negative response. In addition, there are emotional differences. These differences can come from the individual personal personality. Then there may be male-female differences. Often many males sex drive may be higher that the female (Penner & Penner, 2003). Not to mention, many research says that sexuality dimension with age, and several say that this behavior persist throughout the life span (Wallace, 2014). However, some of the issues for men are erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is defined as, the persistent inability to achieve or maintain penile erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance (McMahon, 2014). Erectile dysfunction is normally caused by other health issues. Some of the other health issues are: diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and neurological disease. In addition, premature ejaculation cause erectile problems. The female sometimes effects erectile problems. A condition called vaginismus, which makes it hard for man to enter the vagina and cause him to lose his erection (Penner & Penner, 2003). Also, the man could have emotional problems that impacts them too. Emotional problems such as, depression and anxiety. Seeking counseling is needed for treatment of emotional. To add, medical attention is essential for physical factors. These problems could affect the male and the female tremendously.
