The Disease Giardiasis

Improved Essays
Giardiasis Causing problems in the small intestine in animals and humans is the disease known as Giardiasis. It originates from a microscopic parasite, which is an organism that feeds off of another to survive, called Giardia lamblia. It may be spread through contact with infected people and even through animals such as dogs, cats, beavers, cattle, etc. Eating contaminated food and drinking contaminated water amplifies the risk of catching the parasite and contracting Giardiasis. Although it can be found anywhere on the surface of the planet, it is found more commonly in countries of high population that do not have proper sanitary conditions and do not have adequate water quality control (Delgado, A. (n.d.). Giardiasis (S. Kim, Ed.). Retrieved January 23, 2017).
Causes of Giardiasis
Giardiasis can be found in animal and human feces. There is no solid way of preventing Giardiasis but there are ways in which a person can decrease their risk. If someone works in a place where germs are easily spread such as daycare centers, schools, and parks it is a good practice to wash their hands frequently to get rid of unknown microscopic bacteria. Another way of lowering risk of this uncomfortable disease is to not drink tap, pool, stream, pond, water that has not been treated with iodine, it has been filtered, or boiled (Delgado, A. (n.d.). Although medical and nursing staff employ the use of standard and additional precautions the single most important thing that staff can do whilst working is perform effective hand washing to reduce the risks of cross contamination. Everyone has some form of resident flora on their body, this helps the host to stay healthy but when this resident flora is transferred by contact to another person this may cause the person to become ill. In addition to this resident flora a person picks up infectious particles through contact with other people or environmental surroundings (Koutoukidis et al, 2013, p 361). The most effective way an enrolled nurse or other health care workers can decrease the risk of transmission of these infectious organisms is…

Central Idea: Adopting animals and rescuing is much more beneficial than buying an animal from a pet store because you won’t be unknowingly or knowingly supporting a puppy mill, you will be saving an animal’s life, and you will feel better overall in the end about rescuing your new pet rather than buying.
