Giardiasis Causing problems in the small intestine in animals and humans is the disease known as Giardiasis. It originates from a microscopic parasite, which is an organism that feeds off of another to survive, called Giardia lamblia. It may be spread through contact with infected people and even through animals such as dogs, cats, beavers, cattle, etc. Eating contaminated food and drinking contaminated water amplifies the risk of catching the parasite and contracting Giardiasis. Although it can be found anywhere on the surface of the planet, it is found more commonly in countries of high population that do not have proper sanitary conditions and do not have adequate water quality control (Delgado, A. (n.d.). Giardiasis (S. Kim, Ed.). Retrieved January 23, 2017). Causes of Giardiasis Giardiasis can be found in animal and human feces. The parasite lives in or on contaminated water, food, unclean surfaces, changing tables, bathroom handles, in the ground or soil, etc. There are numerous bodies of water that can hold this parasitic organism such as rivers, lakes, ponds, springs, streams, wells, and even in ice that was made from water containing Giardiasis. Animals and people get giardiasis by swallowing contaminated water when swimming in waters where the parasite may reside. These parasites can survive for extended…
Results of the present investigation indicate that both, Zn-gluconate and Zn-sulphate, inhibit the growth of G. lamblia trophozoites in vitro. To date, there are no reports about the effect of Zn on gastrointestinal parasites. Very few studies have so far been conducted on the antibacterial effect of various salts of Zn on enteric pathogens. An in vitro study conducted by Surjawidjaja et al. (2003) showed that Zn-sulfate at concentrations between 1.2 and 1.8 mg/ml inhibited the growth in enteric…
2014 SACNAS National Conference in Los Angeles as well as to an andrology meeting at the NIH to present my findings to the scientific community. At the SACNAS conference, I networked with colleagues, that came from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, on scientific issues and we shared our individual research experiences. The scientific community expressed interest in my project and it further validated my interest in graduate education and research. Following graduation, I was involved in…
2. What type of microorganisms could produce diseases in drinking water? List the microorganisms and the associated diseases. Bacteria such as Salmonella cause Gastroenteritis, salmonella typhi cause typhoid, shigella cause dysentery, Vibrio cholera cause cholera. Viruses such as Hepatitis A cause infection. Protozoans such as Entamoeba histolytica cause amoebic dysentery, Giardia lamblia cause giardiasis, and Cryptosporidium cause Cryptosporidiosis). Microorganisms cause symptoms such as…
condoms, needles, children's toys, dead animals or plants, etc.; • Gases such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon dioxide, methane, etc.; • Emulsions such as paints, adhesives, mayonnaise, hair colorants, emulsified oils, etc.; • Toxins such as pesticides, poisons, herbicides, etc. • Pharmaceuticals and hormones and other hazardous substances • Thermal pollution from power stations and industrial manufacturers Biological pollutants If the wastewater contains human feces, as is the case for sewage, then…
thus the therapy would eliminate mortalities caused by diarrhea and diseases such as cholera. According to the World Health Organization (2017), “Diarrheal disease is the second leading cause of death in children under five years old, and is responsible for killing around 525 000 children every year.” Phase 2: Epidemiological Assessment – A search to find the underlying cause of the situation should be pinpointed. Causes for children needing oral rehydration would be outbreaks of cholera,…
other oft-touched surfaces in your home to keep bacteria and viruses from spreading from one person to another. Garlic The healing benefits of garlic have been known and utilized for centuries. However, modern scientific studies have confirmed what ancient healers already knew. In a 1983 medical publication, this statement was put forth: “Recent publications indicate that garlic extract has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against many genera of bacteria and fungi.” More recent…
used in agriculture such as Fertilizer, and insecticide, chlorinated water from Water Treatment plants, and finally various acids from many different manufacturing activities, like mining, mineral digging, and taking out glaciar water which has many different gases and acidic fumes which can cause a 1,000 degree burn and die under the hot fumes”(C. Michael Hogan pg3/6), Secondly Water pollution can kill thousands if not millions of people in many places around the world such as in China,…
others are more severe and prolonged in nature. Bacterial infections can enter the body when they are ingested on tainted food or water. Some common bacteria that instigate bouts of diarrhea are salmonella, campylobacter, Escherichia coli (E. coli), and Shigella. Hepatitis and Rotavirus are two viral infections that have diarrhea as a symptom of their presence. Others include Norwalk, Cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex viruses. Simple intolerance to particular foods can cause diarrhea. It's…
