The emergence of humanistic psychology in the 1950s was due to the misunderstanding of unconscious motivation and what causes certain behaviors. Abraham Maslow and Carl Rogers became the cofounders of humanistic psychology from these two misinterpretation of which is now the study of psychoanalysis and behaviorism. Combined was the development of humanistic psychology, also known as humanism. Humanism believes that all people intend to have good behavior but both mental and social problems can stop a person’s growth and self-actualization. It also believes people will exercise their free will to reach their full potential through self-actualization. Humanistic education also known as person-centered education is a movement by Maslow because he wants children and adolescents to become self-actualized adults and said that classrooms should be open for creativity so that at a young age, it will help students have a desire to learn. His objectives for humanistic education are for students to be curious about what is happening about around them. He wants them to live with the knowledge of understanding of why things are, because of who and the purpose of it. It is a student’s responsibility to be autonomous and self-directed for what they learning but to also be creative with learning and indulge themselves in all things that peak their …show more content…
It imparts clients with self-actualization tools to help themselves from incongruence to congruence. Incongruence makes it hard for the client to know who they are. Congruence helps the client move towards self-actualization and gives balance among perceived self, ideal self and real self. Empathy makes it easier for the client to understand or recognize another person’s emotions.
