Since the beginning of time people have been attempting to use media such as literature, movies, and music as a way to sway other people’s beliefs and the way they interpret the world around them. The discussion about how far a movie or book can influence the way we interpret the world sparks a lot of arguments. On one hand, some people believe that books or movies can be powerful enough that it changes a society’s point of view on a subject. While on the other hand, other people argue that movies or books can only entertain, but not change the way people interpret the world around them. Some will say that they are all just authors, however, they are actually both teachers. In the novel, The Book Thief by Zusak readers are taught the importance of words. The book which takes place in Germany during the reign of the Third Reich; shows readers the way a little girl uses words to build bonds with people and comfort. The protagonist of the book Liesel Meminger is taught the importance of words by Hans Hubermann her step-father. Hans was the first adult to ever win Liesel’s trust and he did this by not only being kind and compassionate but by also teaching her how to read. Later in the novel, Liesel uses words to build strong relationships with friends and family. She also uses the power of words to help comfort herself and others during nightly bomb raids on her town. She accomplishes this by reading a book out loud to the people present in the bunker with her. As a result of her actions, readers learn the importance that words have and how they can be
