What is the occasion? (When does the story take place? When is the story being told? Why does the author need to tell this story?)
The Book of Unknown Americans takes place in a small town in Delaware. The Rivera family traveled there from a town called Pátzcuaro, which is located in Michoacán, Mexico. This story takes place over a year in the 21st century, the exact year is 2014. The Rivera 's have to deal with leaving a poor town they 've grown up in with little technology to moving to an unknown place where they are "gringos." They have to deal with the modern american lifestyle by learning english, interacting with people different than them and living a new lifestyle. The author tells this story to show how illegal and legal immigrants

The author also tries to convey the sacrifices and the bravery it takes to make a big step like that. For example, the Rivera 's had to leave everything behind including they 're family, house and many belongings, all for Maribel 's health. Today 's illegal immigrants are categorized as being inferior and a threat to our country, therefore the author tries to show the reader how the immigrants are regular people who try to fit in like any other american. The Rivera 's make new friendships like Alma and Celia, but especially between Mayor and Maribel. They become very close "friends" which helps Maribel improve her brain and get better. In the story it states, " She started laughing. 'I knew it wouldn 't last, ' she said. I knew it, too. But I wished like hell it would. (Henríquez 235)" Maribel and Mayor were so close that they helped each other 's lives, Maribel 's brain improved drastically and Mayor matured and found out what real love and attention feels like even though in school he was looked at as the outcast and at home he was known as the younger brother of the well known Enrique who played college soccer at Duke. Maribel experiences trying to go back to the way she used to be before her accident so she can live a normal life. Alma is trying to watch over Maribel while trying not to show how homesick she actually is. Arturo is trying to to make money to support is family and make them feel like Delaware is their home. Mayor dealt with trying live up to the standards that his brother, Enrique, had set when he left for a soccer scholarship at Duke. Mayor 's parents deal with conflict between them. The books purpose is showing how people get through tough times. Illegal immigrants are mostly ostracized for interrupting peace and not following the proper orders of the border, even though we all know that they are trying to find peace and be salvation somewhere in the USA. I think after reading this book, readers will take into consideration the hardship and the bravery that it takes to do things like that and the next time they hear something bad about immigrants they 'll understand that not all of them are the same. Even though they fall under the category of "illegal" that doesn 't mean that they don 't have a valuable reason to cross the border, they could have had a death in the family, war could have been the case or they could have run out of money. Nobody knows everyone 's story, so we can 't always assume that they don 't have a

In the story, Mother’s Tongue, an illegal immigrant named Jose Luis comes to the U.S in the search for a better life and finds out that accomplishing that will not be as easy as he thinks. He is considered a criminal in the eyes of the U.S., because he didn’t take the necessary steps it takes to be a legal resident.…

In “Be American,” Carlos Bulosan reveals the lack of choice a Filipino had at the time through the story of someone’s cousin, Consorcio, and his struggle to gain citizenship in America. Bulosan’s short story shares this idea of no choice with a political cartoon known as “What Will He Do,” which depicts President McKinley deciding whether or not to keep the Philippines or “send them to Spain” while the globe watches for his decision. Through the visual of President McKinley making a decision for the Philippines, the political cartoon “What Will He Do,” argues the Philippines are deprived of choice. “Be American” mirrors this argument by linking the Consorcio and his cousin to the idea of lack of choice.…
