Junior started his first day of high school and he was excited about his geometry class. After a couple hours when his teacher, Mr.P, who is a skinny, lazy, old and shows up to class wearing pajamas and slippers, told him to open the geometry book for the first lesson, Junior’s excitement were destroyed. Once he opened the book, he noticed that his mother used that same book thirty years ago. Junior was loathed about it because he does not want to learn from the same book his parents and community learned how to give up on themselves. “ The school and my tribe are so poor and sad that we have to study the same dang books our parents studied from. That is absolutely the saddest thing in the world “ ( Alexie 31). Junior’s sister, Mary, gave up because of that book and Junior wants to escape from the same results. After realizing what that book symbolizes for the people who live on the reservation , he said: “ My hopes and dreams floated up in a mushroom cloud “ ( Alexie 31). Junior threw the geometry book in Mr.P face and he was suspended from school. Surprisingly, Mr.P approached to Junior one day to talked to him about how he was trying to kill Native American’s culture and how the reservation shapes you future if you do not find the way out. Junior had the chance to show the white community that Native Americans deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. He got out of the reservation as a betrayer, but he will still have a tough road achieving his dreams, in the view of the fact that other people are still gonna look down on him. He ran away from the reservation but the reservation will still be with him. He showed his readers that they can do anything if they have hope, faith, and patience to wait for the right opportunity to take. Junior shows how being different or having different life conditions can make other people observe you differently. The reservation tried to block Junior’s dreams, and hope by giving the people who live there a lot of limitations that could shape their character. From the book, in my opinion, Junior is a role model for the people on the reservation, for the reason that he inspires other people to never lose hope and faith, and always dream big, and do not let stereotypes define who you are as a human
