In William Shakespeare’s play Macbeth, the main character Macbeth and his wife Lady Macbeth are faced with the dilemma to kill their beloved king, Duncan. Macbeth, thane of Glamis, is met by three witches that predict he will be thane of Cawdor and king hereafter. Macbeth is confused by these prophecies until a messenger comes moments after Macbeth’s encounter with the witches to announce King Duncan pronounces Macbeth thane of Cawdor. He is instantly convinced that the witches’ prophecies are true. After reading Macbeth’s letter about the witches’ prophecies and receiving news from a messenger that Duncan comes to visit, Lady Macbeth knows that Duncan will not leave her house alive. She says, “The raven himself is hoarse/ That croaks the fatal entrance of Duncan/ Under my battlements” (1.5.45 47). Her instant solution to gain power is to eliminate Duncan as soon as possible displaying her greed and shows her wickedness by following her gut decision of killing Duncan. She does not hesitant or stop to think about her decision, but instead, she plans to manipulate Macbeth to go forward with her intentions. She thought of the evil plan, and she persuaded Macbeth to follow her plan despite the fact he did not want to. It was her idea all along and Macbeth was like a puppet, for she made him do what she wanted. When Lady Macbeth explains the intricate plan, the audience can see the deviousness of her character through the evilness of her plan. “What cannot you and I perform upon/ Th’ unguarded Duncan?” (1.7.79-80) She planted the idea and plan into Macbeth’s head because she has a large influence in Macbeth’s decision making process. She has no humanity because she thinks of a plan that meets the goal of murder whiling placing the blame on someone else.
