Rather than reading a syllabus during the first day of class, I did a syllabus activity for all my courses during the Spring of 2017; The course syllabi were posted in the BlackBoard Vista in advance and I distributed a handout containing a set of questions during the first day of class. The following is an example of a syllabus questionnaire (or “syllabus reconnaissance” as the ACUE 2A Unit calls it) for a music ensemble class:
1. When will the performance specifics including call times be announced?
2. Identify 4 performances listed in the syllabus.
3. How many points will go toward Attendance & Punctuality?
4. Whose responsibility is it to confirm the status of your attendance record if you …show more content…
How many points will go toward enthusiasm and positive conduct?
8. What is the number that constitutes the failing grade (F) for this class?
9. What is the class policy on the use of electronic devices?
10. What will happen if the no-use-electronic-device-policy violation is repeated?
1-b. Describe what worked well.
I liked the fact that I did not have to spend time reading the syllabi. Instead, we used the class time more effectively by doing content-related activities. I also like the fact that students were more aware of the specifics in the syllabi since they have to dig into the syllabi to find answers for the syllabus questionnaire.
1-c. Share student reactions or responses.
Students took the syllabus questionnaire seriously in general. More than 95% of the students submitted their answers by the due date. If they did not abide by the due date, they were asked to submit their answers by the following class period, and they all did so. I was glad to see that the answers almost always correctly reflected what’s stated in the syllabi.
2-a. Describe any challenges you encountered.
Some students’ answers were not correct, and this gave me a chance to point out pertinent information in the
