Keurig Green Mountain was founded on sustainability and continues to use eco-friendly approaches in all aspects of business. Robert J. Bowman of Supply Chain Brain refers to Keurig Green Mountain as a green company that is getting even greener (Bowman).
To start, Keurig firmly believes that a good business model begins with great relationships, especially with their coffee farmers. They establish supplier guidelines to ensure responsible sourcing over their crop-this is especially important when it comes to worker conditions and raw materials sourcing. Keurig ensures that their supply chain follows international standards. While some companies might find this a hassle, Keurig holds their integrity at the core of their organization. Keurig has strict standards when it comes to health and safety, environmental responsibility, animal testing, wages and benefits, child labor and many more (Keurig Green Mountain).
The products at Keurig have been designed to have a sustainable lifecycle. Numerous programs have been created to ensure that Keurig maintains a low impact on the environment. Keurig notes seven basic stages in their value chain that they focus on in efforts to reduce their environmental impact. From cultivation and processing to end of life, they strive to reduce water consumption, recycle, minimizing their carbon footprint, follow responsible sourcing guidelines, streamlining the transportation process, reducing waste, and selling recyclable k-cups. Keurig plans to hit a huge milestone in 2020 by making all of their k-cups fully recyclable (Keurig Green Mountain). Along with the goal of making fully recyclable k-cups by 2020, Keurig has several other sustainability targets they would like to accomplish. They would like to further reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, source their products according to very strict guidelines, and have zero waste-to-landfill and their facilities. In addition, Keurig has also vowed to “provide access to clean water to one million people worldwide,” (Bowman) and with their high-tech brewing designs that reduce wasted water, this is a goal that may not be too far out of reach (Bowman). A huge part of the Keurig organizational model is making sure their employees fully understand the vision and values of the company. They strongly believe that if you have engaged and knowledgeable employees that it will propel the company to meet their goals and become successful. This is of utmost importance when it comes to engaging the people and their communities. Keurig supports the community through grants, volunteering, donation programs and more; they believe that uplifting the community will cause their business to thrive, and so far, they have been correct. As mentioned in the Supply Chain analysis, Keurig strived to have a strong and resilient supply chain by maintaining a positive relationship with their employees, communities, and partners (Keurig Green Mountain). One of the most admirable aspects of Keurig Green Mountain’s commitment to sustainability is their efforts when it comes to water conservation and stewardship. Keurig strives to optimize, balance, and connect communities around the world to clean water sources. One of the main ways that the Keurig brewing systems reduce waste (especially water waste) is by allowing you to make only as much coffee as you are prepared to drink. The average home batch coffee machine wastes approximately 15 percent of the coffee and water. This is reduced by the Keurig systems because you are simply making what the consumer needs rather than what they believe they will need throughout the day. In addition, the water conservation efforts better the quality of life for the farmers that serve Keurig. By conserving water throughout the supply chain process, from farmer to consumer, allows them to give back to communities with water conservation issues (Keurig Green Mountain). From their strong relationship with suppliers, to their positive presence in communities around the world, Keurig has created programs that have allowed them to become a leader in environmental friendly procedures and corporate social responsibility. When Keurig ran into issues with the recyclability of their products, they came back with a plan to make their company even more environmentally friendly by the year 2020, and so far, they are on track to meet their
