Billie Jo tells us that she loves to play the piano and has an amazing taste for apples. Her dad, Bayard Kelby, is a farmer and was expecting a boy but instead got a girl. Ma also taught Billie to play the piano. Billie Jo’s music manager at her school is Arley Wanderdale who wants her to play in his band. When Billie Jo persuade her mom, she said yes because they desperately needed the money. In July her mom accidentally mistakes a bucket of kerosene for water, and starts a fire, when Polly went running for Bayard, Billie Jo quickly throws the kerosene out the door splashing it on her mom. Billie Jo is badly injured while trying to put out the flames. Soon after Billie’s mom is severely burnt she dies no longer less than a month. While the dad tries to solve his problems by drinking and digging a pond for Ma, Billie Jo goes on her own journey to the west. Throughout her traveling, she learns that family is the most important thing and goes back home. Mostly throughout the story, we see the piano recur, apples, and her
