What is strength? The definition of strength according to Webster’s dictionary, (and other dictionary sources)” is the quality of being strong or having great power (strength)”. But what does that really mean to us? The quality of being strong or obtaining strength means to be able to stand through anything and everything. For instance, my father had passed away when I was in sixth grade. Every year when it comes to his birthday or his death anniversary and something gets posted on social media about it, someone will usually leave some sort of a comment and say, “I’m sorry for your loss, that’s incredible how you’ve had to go through this at such a young age, you’re the strongest person I know.” But Am I really the strongest person they know? See, that’s the wonderful thing about words. Words have many definitions and multiple meanings to them. We may use a word one way, but it could really mean another thing.

When most people think of strength they always go straight for the connotation of the word. Most people think of gyms, muscles, and working out. The word strength isn’t just a physical thing, it’s also an emotional thing. Just like I previously said before when someone said I was the strongest person they knew. They had meant it emotionally. It also came from the German word strengida.” Today we don’t really used the word strong or strength in any slang words or phrase. Even though it’s not used in slang the word strong still is used in different ways. More ways that it is used is when we say phrases like “WHOAH, THAT WAS A REALLY STONG SMELL”. In “Man of Steel”, Superman is able to hold up massive parts of a ship that is collapsing, and would have crushed the man that the parts were going to fall on. No these incidents are not exactly the same, but no ordinary human would be able to pull those off.…

In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, strength is represented both physically and emotionally. Tolkein refers to physical attributes,"Greatest in green when groves are bare, and an axe in his other, one huge, monstrous, a perilous spar to expound in speech, who might." The terms connecting to physical strength are represented by huge and monsterous but can be infered by the saying "an axe in his other. " The connection between huge and monsterous is the relationship that connects the idea of monstrosity in this text and connects it to others. Emotional strength is represented in the text via faith and relationship with god, "The knight of the green chapel, men know me as, many; therefore to find me, if you fain it, you'll fail never."…

He is also proved his strength when he battled Nag in the bathroom. He was being tossed like a rag doll and was banged against the floor and bath but still held on. He also showed strength when he battled Nagaina and he bit her tail and was holding on and went underneath the ground inside Nag and Nagaina’s home. For example it says,” Then he was battered to and fro as a rat is shaken by a dog-to and fro on the floor, up and down, and around in great circles, but his eyes were red and he held on as his body cart whipped over the floor, upsetting the tin dipper and the soap dish and the flesh brush, and banged against the tin side of the bath. As he held, he closed his jaws tighter, for he made sure he would be banged to death, and for honor of his family, he preferred to be found with his teeth locked.”…
